Ben Stokes‘ most talked-about return to cricket was a flop. The controversial all-rounder made a mere 2 runs for Canterbury, against Otago Volts, on Sunday. This was Stokes first match in 69 days after ECB suspended him from playing international cricket.

Canterbury managed 221 for 9 in 50 overs. Todd Astle top scored with 51. In reply, Otago are 66 for 0 in 12.5 overs (at the time of publishing this report). Stokes has bowled 4 overs for 26 so far.

Canterbury is Stokes home town, where he now plays domestic cricket after CCA received an NOC from ECB earlier this week. Stokes has maintained that this is a personal visit to the Kiwi nation and wants his province to do well.

The 26-year old was hopeful of getting some match time in a bid to prepare of the remainder of the 2017-18 Ashes. England trail 0-1, after being handed a humiliating 10-wicket defeat at The Gabba.
