Bengal bowlers did well to restrict Railways to 189 for nine on day one of their crucial four-day Cooch Behar Trophy match at Kalyani.

The winners of the match will get promoted to the Elite Division.

Eyeing to make the cut, Bengal who were demoted to Plate last season, opted to bowl after winning the toss as their bowlers brilliantly responded to the captain’s call.

A R Singh (4/54) led the Bengal attack, while Ravikant Singh (3/81) gave a fine support at the other end.

After being reduced to 82/4 in the morning, Railways skipper Abhishek Nayar waged a lone battle with a delightful 65 from 92 balls (6×4, 3×6).

But Bengal bowlers continued their good work and A A Gani chipped in with 2/36 including the vital wicket of Yadav to derail the Railways.

Brief Scores: Railways 189/9 in 77 overs (AS Yadav 65; AR Singh 4/54, Ravikant Singh 3/81) vs Bengal. (PTI)
