An unexpected twist to Australia vs. Pakistan’s Boxing Day Test at the MCG occurred when a technical issue trapped the third umpire in a lift. Richard Illingworth, the third umpire, was stuck between levels by the broken elevator, which caused a chaotic wait of several minutes.
The players were back on the field as Australia was bowling against Pakistan in the second session. However, the typical sight of Illingworth perched in his room was conspicuously absent as the bowler readied himself to run in. The stadium speaker clarified the sudden pause by saying, “The game is delayed because the third umpire… is stuck in the lift.” This caused the confusion to convert into laughter.

As players congregated on the field, they laughed and joked with one other, looking at each other perplexed. Funny jokes and lighthearted analysis flooded social media, perfectly encapsulating the bizarre circumstances. They even responded on Twitter, Cricket Australia.
When Illingworth eventually reappeared, the relieved audience erupted in cheers and applause. This was after frantic efforts backstage.
At the end of the second session of day three of the second Test against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday, Australia had increased their lead to 161 runs thanks to a counterattacking half-century by Mitchell Marsh and his partnership with Steve Smith. Australia had overcome an early loss of wickets.
Australia was 107/4 at Tea, with Steve Smith (26) and Marsh (57) undefeated.
