An brilliant all-round performance from Chamari Athapaththu guided Sri Lanka Women to a 10-run win over Sri Lanka in Match 20 of Women’s T20 World Cup 2016. Her outstanding batting performance, scoring 52 to guide her side to 114, and a great bowling display, 1 for 12 in four overs, guided her side to win in what looked like a certain loss. The South African side will be kicking themselves for not chasing down this score, considering they were 50/0 after 9 overs. Both the openers, Dane van Niekerk and Trisha Chetty played beautifully, before the former was run out in the start of 10th over, which started the downfall. In their reply, South Africa made a cautious start, scoring 19 runs in their first 4 overs, losing no wicket in the process. They upped the ante a bit in the 5th over, scoring 10 runs from it. Both van Niekerk and Trisha Chetty complimented each other’s game, reading the situation and getting 6 runs of each over. In the 10th over, South Africa lost their first wicket, as van Niekerk was run out for 24.  They were dealt with another blow as captain Miguel Du Preez was caught lbw of Athapaththu for 0. And the pressure was telling, as South Africa lost their third wicket in 8 deliveries, as the set batter Chetty was caught lbw of Kaushalya’s bowling, leaving her side in troubled situation at 52/3.

Soon, two new players were in the crease, and South Africa were hoping Kapp and Dinesha Davnarain can weather the storm. But they were to face more trouble as Davnarain was caught lbw of Sugandika Kumari, leaving her side at 65/4 after 13.3 overs. With 5 overs remaining, South Africa were in deep trouble, needing 44 runs to win, and their best batters gone. More misery awaited for SA in the 16th over, as the dangerous Kapp was brilliantly caught and bowled by Prabhodhani for 14. The 17th over saw Lee score a six, before perishing, getting caught by the keeper for 12. The 18th over was fruitful for SA, as it produced 8 runs, which left them needing 22 in last 2 overs. The 19th over only got them 9 runs, meaning 13 runs were needed in the final over. And an outstanding last over from Lokusuriyage, conceding just 2 runs, meant Sri Lanka won the game by 10 runs.

Earlier, A brilliant knock of 52 by Chamari Athapaththu guided Sri Lanka Women to 114/7 in their 20 overs against South Africa in Match 20 of Women’s T20 World Cup 2016 at Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru. Athapaththu was the lone fighter in a side, which failed to deal with pace and spin of South African attack. Athapaththu’s 52 came of 49 balls, as she led from the front with some beautiful shots. She was run out by Marizanne Kapp in the 17th over trying to run for a single. For South Africa, Kapp and Sune Luus bowled beautifully, taking two wickets each and restricting the Lankan women to 114.
