Cheteshwar Pujara surpassed Dean Elgar to become the highest run-getter in Tests in 2017. Pujara who was on 1, 091, scored 9 more runs during India‘s second innings in the third Test against Sri Lanka to go past Elgar’s 1,098. At the third place in the list is Dimuth Karunaratne with 1,018 runs from matches he played in 2017. Pujara had completed 3,000 Test runs in India and now has 4354 career runs in the format.

India elected to bat at Delhi and sent Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay to open the innings. They were off to a decent start but Dilruwan Perera did not let the partnership grow, removing Dhawan for 23. Pujara was dismissed for identical runs and India later on put up 536 for 7 decl. In the second innings, India lost two quick wickets. Pujara, who was sent at No. 4, remained unbeaten with Dhawan till lunch and got to the required runs in the second session to top the list.

India are 1-0 up in the series. After the teams ended the first Test at Kolkata in an exciting draw, the hosts dominated Sri Lanka thoroughly in the following match, defeating them by an innings and 239 runs at Nagpur. This was India’s biggest win over Sri Lanka.
