Chris Woakes, England’s star all-rounder, has announced his retirement from international cricket after a nearly 15-year career, which included two World Cup titles and numerous key Test match performances. The 36-year-old had hoped to play as England’s senior fast bowler during the Ashes tour this winter, but he was ruled out due to a dislocated shoulder sustained during the fifth Test against India this summer.
Woakes has decided to finish his playing career on the domestic circuit, rather than attempt a comeback in 2026, after England did not renew his central contract this month. Rob Key, team director, predicts a ‘new cycle‘ for England’s Test team starting next summer.
“The moment has come and Iâve decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket. Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams.,â said Woakes in a statement.
“Representing England, wearing the Three Lions, and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things Iâll look back on with the greatest pride,” he added.
âMaking my debut in 2011 in Australia seems like yesterday, but Time flies when you are having fun. Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series is something I never thought was possible, and those memories and celebrations with my teammates will stay with me forever.
âTo my Mum and Dad, my wife Amie and are girls Laila and Evie, thank you for your unwavering love, support and sacrifices over the years. None of this would have been possible without you.
âTo the fans⦠my coaches, teammates and everyone behind the scenes – both with England and Warwickshire, who helped me play for my country- your guidance and friendship has meant the world.
âI look forward to continuing to play county cricket and exploring more franchise opportunities in the near future,â he concluded.
