Birla Sun Life’s latest ad campaign has caused uproar amongst Yuvraj Singh’s fans, but the company says it was the Indian cricketer’s idea.

While the whole country continues to pour in get well soon wishes to the ailing Yuvraj Singh, Birla Sun Life Insurance’s new ad includes Yuvraj s tryst with his topsy-turvy life. According to The Indian Express, it was the star cricketer who wanted to feature his life s ups and downs in the ad. He even went to the extent of replacing the word “injury” with “health problems”.

“He mentioned once that he did not get any time to enjoy the moment because of the looming IPL,” recollects Ajay Kakar, chief marketing officer, financial services, Aditya Birla Group. Shortly after the IPL, Yuvraj was out of action.

However, this has not gone down too well with Yuvraj s fans who instantly posted their reactions on the micro-blogging site, Twitter alleging the company of cashing in just when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Refuting all such allegations, Kakar clearly stated that the release of the ad has nothing to do with his illness and that the fans are only thinking so due to the co-incidence.

“At that time, we only knew of his illness, not the cancer. We have a calendar to follow. This series was planned for February-March, the peak investment season, which is why it has been released now,” says Kakar. Nandita Chalam, vice president and executive creative director, JWT justifies the act saying, “It was planned in September and shot in October-November.”

Despite the controversy surrounding the campaign, the company has no plans to pull out the ad.
