Axar Patel, India’s left-arm spinning allrounder, has made his second noteworthy performance for English county side Durham in the span of three matches, taking 7/54 to take his tally of wickets to nine in a County Championship Division Two match with Warwickshire.

Axar finished with figures 27.4-1-54-7 to leave Durham to chase 218 for their fourth win of the County Championship.

Patel’s seven wickets at Birmingham included Ian Bell, Tim Ambrose and Warwickshire captain Jeetan Patel, and helped bring the home side back from 47/1 to 199 all out. Patel’s first wicket was that of the in-form Bel, out for 10, and then he bowled Dominic Sibley, trapped former England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose lbw for 42, bowled Jeetan Patel for 7 and ran though the tail. His seventh wicket was Warwickshire’s No 11, the former England pace bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

On Durham debut last month, Axhar was stranded five short of a century in an innings win over Glamorgan.

The 24-year-old, who has played 38 ODIs and 11 T20Is for India, signed with Durham for their last six Championship games. He has been in England for much of the summer, having played for India A since mid-June.
