Indian Test opener Murali Vijay followed up his first innings 56 with a century in the second innings of his County Championship debut for Essex, helping the team to their fifth win of the season.

Vijay, who was dropped for the last three Test against England after poor run of form that included a pair in the 2nd Test against England at Lord’s, had signed with Essex a week earlier and became the first Essex player to score a century on debut after Hashim Amla achieved the feat against Glamorgan in 2009.

Chasing 282 to win against Nottinghamshire, Essex resumed on 147 for one and Vijay with Tom Westley took Essex close to the target. The 34-year-old Tamil Nadu batsman compiled his 25th First-Class century off 181 deliveries before he was picked up by Samit Patel.

Westley remained unbeaten on 110 with Dan Lawrence for company on 29 off 31 balls as Essex overhauled the target with eight wickets in hand.

For Essex, former South African spinner Simon Harmer picked six for 87 in Nottinghamshire’s second innings to go with his 48 with the bat.
