A five-wicket win has put Jamaica Tallawahs at the top of the 2018 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table. Chasing 152 at Bridgetown, Tallawahs beat Barbados Tridents with 16 balls to spare, with Johnson Charles (53) and Rovman Powell (35*) putting in clutch performances.

Each of the seven bowlers Tallawahs used took a wicket, with Oshane Thomas netting the best figures of 2/22 in four overs. As wickets fell around him, Martin Guptill played a lone hand with 73 off 60 balls to take the score from 55/5 to 129/7 before he was out to Powell. Guptill hit three sixes and four fours in his fifty; one two other players reached 20 – Imran Khan and Ashley Nurse.

Eleven extras (including 10 wides) helped Tallawahs to 151/9 in their 20 overs.

In the chase Tallawahs lost Glenn Phillips in the second over but thanks to Charles, who smacked five fours and three sixes in his 33-ball 55, the runs came at a decent rate. Kennar Lewis struggled to force the pace, facing 20 balls for his 8, but in this time the score moved from 11/1 to 67/2 before Charles was bowled by Wahab Riaz in the ninth over.

Powell’s unbeaten 35 was assisted by Colin de Grandhomme’s eight-ball 15 not out to complete a five-wicket win in 17.2 overs.

This put Tallawahs at No 1 on the CPL leaderboard with 10 points, two clear of Trinbado Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors. This was Tridents’ third loss in a row.
