The Supreme Court on Thursday refused any special hearing in the sexual harassment case against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CEO Rahul Johri.

Rashmi Nair, who claims to be a women issue activist, had filed the petition in the apex court and had insisted that there was every reason for BCCI Ombudsman DK Jain to revisit the case against Johri.

“Johri had a very colourful past in each and every organisation where he worked and he managed to get away with all allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by threat, coercion or greed,” the petition had said.

Ajit Tendulkar has played a pivotal role in the much-admired career of Sachin Tendulkar and the cricket icon Thursday recalled an instance when the two brothers faced each other for the only time and neither of the two wanted to win.

India and England have retained their top positions in the team rankings for Tests and ODIs, respectively, after the annual update on Thursday in which series results from 2015-16 are removed and outcomes from 2016-17 and 2017-18 are weighted at 50 per cent.

India’s lead over New Zealand in the ICC Test team rankings has narrowed from eight to two points and England remain at the top of the ICC ODI team rankings with their gap over India reduced to just two points in an expanded table.

In the Test rankings, India were on 116 points and New Zealand on 108 before the update but India’s 3-0 win over South Africa and 2-1 win in Sri Lanka being purged as part of the 2015-16 season sees them losing three points while New Zealand’s two 2-0 defeats to Australia being removed sees them gain three points.

When asked how challenging it was to lead CSK in Dhoni’s absence, Raina said: “I think losing him (Dhoni) as a captain is not an issue, losing him as a batsman is always difficult for us. That’s what happened for us against Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. When he comes to the crease a lot of pressure is created for other teams. When he is not in the team, we see the difference.”

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday said the World Cup in the United Kingdom will offer beautiful batting tracks but he doesn’t expect the ball to swing much in the hot conditions that will prevail there.

The World Cup, which will kick-start on May 30 in the UK, will see all 10 participating nations face-off against each other.

“I am told it’s going to be a hot summer. Even in the Champions Trophy the wickets were superb when the sun was out. In the heat the wickets get really flat. I am sure they will give beautiful tracks to bat on,” Tendulkar said.

MS Dhoni contributed with both bat and glove in Chennai Super Kings 80-run win over Delhi Capitals. His late surge propelled CSK to a total of 179/4 and later, he accounted for the wickets of Chris Morris and DC skipper Shreyas Iyer with two stunning stumpings in the same over.

When asked about his glove work in the post-match presentation on Wednesday, Dhoni said that it is “something that comes from tennis-ball cricket”. He warned that youngsters should get the basics right before trying to emulate him.

“Still you need to do the basics right and then graduate to the next level. If you want to keep like that, you may commit a lot of mistakes. It’s important to stick to the basics.”

The allrounder Jimmy Neesham, World Cup-bound wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell and opening batsman Will Young are the new names on the list of 20 players offered New Zealand Cricket (NZC) contracts for 2019-20.

Neesham has been centrally contracted for the first time since 2017-18, a year in which he lost his place in all three New Zealand squads and contemplated retiring. Neesham forced his way back into the reckoning with a successful 2018-19 Ford Trophy followed by two games for New Zealand A versus India A in December. In five innings since he returned to New Zealand’s ODI squad in January, he has 204 runs at a strike-rate of 182.14 – which includes six sixes in an over on comeback – and claimed 10 wickets at 22.90 with an economy rate of 5.38.

Ian Chappell believes that despite the controversial image of explosive batsman David Warner, his understanding of the game is second to none and claimed that he should have succeeded Michael Clarke into the role of Australia captain and not Steve Smith.

“Anybody who says Warner’s too difficult — now I’m not in the dressing room, so I don’t know — but the bit I’ve had to do with David Warner, I think he would have been a better captain than Steve Smith because he’s got a very good understanding of the game of cricket, it’s a very aggressive understanding of the game of cricket,” Chappell, a former Australia captain himself, was quoted as saying by Foxsports.com.au.

Controversial England batsman Alex Hales will be available for Nottinghamshire for the rest of the white-ball season. Hales was axed from all England squads, including the provisional 15-man party for this year’s World Cup, after reportedly failing a second test for recreational drugs.

But his English county Nottinghamshire believe it is in the interests of “all concerned” for the batsman to return to playing cricket, starting with Friday’s game against Durham. “The recent events in relation to Alex Hales have been difficult for everyone involved with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club,” a statement from the club read on Wednesday.
