Young guns Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer were among 11 players who were retained by their respective franchises for the eight-team T20 Mumbai League season 2 commencing on May 14.

According to the information on the League’s website, each team could retain two players, but the North Mumbai Panthers have hung on to only one player ahead of the May 4 players auction.

KL Rahul is a phenomenal talent who has the ability to emulate Virat Kohli‘s heady achievements if he remains in his “zone”, feels none other than ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle. Rahul, 27, has overcome probably the toughest phase in his life and career which saw him endure a dismal run in the Test tour of Australia and an interim BCCI suspension for making sexist comments on a TV chat show alongside India teammate Hardik Pandya.

Having put that phase behind, Rahul let his bat do the talking and alongside his Kings XI Punjab teammate Gayle, forged one of the most destructive opening combinations in the ongoing IPL. “KL is definitely one of the players that comes to my mind (when you talk about the current India players), I hope he produces the goods like Virat. After Virat, it should be him,” Gayle said.

Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore admitted that the team hasn’t performed to its potential in the ongoing Indian Premier League, where they are in danger of losing out on a play-off spot.

Mysore however feels that they have been let down by the Eden track. “We will try and continue to have good discussions with the CAB, curator, the president and others to make sure that as home team we should have some advantage.”

Legendary paceman Wasim Akram cautioned against discounting Mohammad Amir ahead of next month’s World Cup, saying Pakistan’s pace spearhead would return to form following a disappointing string of performances at the crease.

The 27-year-old Amir was left off Pakistan’s preliminary World Cup squad but has a chance to force his way back into the final 15 if he does well in the five-match one-day international series against England starting from May 8.

All teams have until May 23 to change their World Cup squads.

Missing the upcoming World Cup would likely serve as another crippling setback for the young bowler’s career after he missed the tournament in both 2011 and 2015 due to an embarrassing five-year ban over match fixing.

The cricket bug never left Sushil Nadkarni even as he pursued his ‘Great American Dream’ and the former India U-19 batsman is happy that unlike him, the current crop of expats representing the United States will be able to live their dream.

Last week, USA sealed one-day international status for the first time with a third straight victory at the World Cricket League Division Two event in Namibia. The 42-year-old had captained USA when cricket was more of a vocation for the South Asian community after he migrated in the mid-90’s to pursue engineering.

But things have changed now and with ICC giving them ODI status, it will be like a “dream fulfilled” for many, according to Nadkarni.

Mumbai Indians‘ Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff left for Australia to join the national camp for ICC World Cup in England next month.

Twenty nine-year-old Behrendorff, who had joined Mumbai Indians after featuring in the ODI series against Pakistan, which the Aussies swept 5-0, took to Twitter to announce that he has left the franchise for now.

Steve Smith David Warner and Marcus Stoinis will also be heading home to join the camp starting May 2.

Alex Hales has been dropped from all England squads following his drug-related bans, which rules him out of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The England & Wales Cricket Board said on Monday that Hales has been withdrawn from England’s provisional 15-man squad for the World Cup to ensure that the team is “free from any distractions” ahead of this summer’s mega event.

His two half-centuries this IPL season may have come in his favoured opening slot but Shubman Gill has defended Kolkata Knight Riders‘ debatable decision to use him as a floater.

Opening the batting for only the third time this season, the talented 19-year-old smashed a career-best 76 to power KKR to 157 for one in 15 overs against Mumbai Indians Sunday. In the end, KKR made 232/2 in 20 overs. The opener from Punjab, who batted at No. 3 in his debut series for India in the New Zealand ODIs earlier this year, was tried out in various positions, including at No. 7, in a couple of matches.

A 34-run win over Mumbai Indians in match 47 of IPL 2019 has kept Kolkata Knight Riders‘ hopes of making the playoffs alive.

Defending a total of 232/2 after fifties to Andre Russell, Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill, KKR beat MI for their fifth win of the tournament. This gave them 10 points in all, which is the same as Sunrisers Hyderabad (fourth place), Kings XI Punjab (sixth) and Rajasthan Royals (seventh).

After beating Mumbai, KKR are at fifth position on the IPL 2019 points table while MI remain at third with 14 points. This was KKR’s first win after six losses in a row.

They might be playing for different teams, but Deepak Chahar and Rahul Chahar have one aim in common, use the platform in the Indian Premier League to impress the national selectors and represent the country on the international stage.

Delhi Capitals on Sunday claimed a spot in the IPL 2019 play-offs – the first time any Delhi franchise has done so since 2012 – and with victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday, Shreyas Iyer’s team also took top spot on the points table.

For Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting, the belief in the squad has been most visible in a potentially path-breaking season.

“We’ve probably done it the hard way tonight, but the boys are really starting to believe in themselves, they are trusting one another, and playing some good cricket. So all in all, we are pretty happy with where we’re at,” said the former Australia captain. “You want to be peaking at the right time, so for us to bounce back after a five-day break and win tonight was a really good thing.”

  • 9:27 AM IST
Last night, a total of 29 sixes were hit, which is the sixth-most in an IPL match as Kolkata Knight Riders managed to beat Mumbai Indians by 34 runs and keep their Playoff hopes alive, albeit by a thread. Andre Russell was once again at his monstrous best but his knock almost got eclipsed by a belligerent innings from Hardik Pandya, who gave KKR a massive scare.

Australia’s Claire Polosak said it was a “special day” as she made history in becoming the first female umpire to stand in a men’s one-day international.

The 31-year-old officiated in the final of the World Cricket League Division 2 between hosts Namibia and Oman at the weekend and admitted she would “sleep well” after her performance.

Rohit admitted to the Level 1 offence of breaching Article 2.2, which pertains to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.
