Cricket to feature six teams at 2028 olympics, 90 player quota set for the game

In a major announcement for fans, cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will include six teams for both men and women tournament. They also announced on Wednesday that it will be played in T20I format. A total of 90 athlete quotas have been allocated for each gender, allowing each team to name a 15-member squad in accordance with Olympic guidelines.

Cricket was last played in the Olympics over a century ago, at the 1900 Paris game, where a single two-day match between Great Britain and France was played which is now regarded as an unofficial Test. Cricket was initially scheduled to be part of the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, but it was canceled due to lack of enteries

Cricket along with other sports like baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse and squash have been introduced in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The cricket venues have not been announced yet, and the schedule will be released closer to the official start of the games.

Add Cricket Country as a Preferred Source

The process to add cricket to the Los Angeles Games started in August 2021, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed its official desire to be part of the Olympics. This announcement sparked a joint effort between the ICC and the LA28 Organising Committee, which resulted in cricket being officially suggested as one of five new sports in October 2023.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah is already developing a long-term plan to secure cricket’s participation in future Olympic Games, including Brisbane 2032. The former BCCI secretary has been instrumental in the effort to introduce cricket to the Olympic arena in 2028.
