As part our of series looking at the history of each team at the World Cup, today we revisit South Africa‘s past performances and key players from 1992 to 2015. The Proteas missed the first four editions due to their apartheid ban.

  • AB de Villiers holds the record for most runs by a South African at World Cup. In 23 matches, he has scored 1207 runs to top the list followed by legendary allrounder Jacques Kallis (1148) at second and Herschelle Gibbs (1067) at third spot.

  • Gary Kirsten has struck the highest individual score by a South African at the tournament. He scored 188 against UAE at the 1996 World Cup in the Indian subcontinent which was also the first time a South African batsman had reached three-figures at the global showpiece event.

  • De Villiers also holds several other records including the most number of centuries (four), sixes (37) and ducks (four) across three editions for his country.

  • Kallis leads the tally for the most half-centuries with nine such total across five tournaments.

  • David Miller has hit the most number of sixes in an innings. He claimed the record when he belted nine sixes against Zimbabwe during his unbeaten 138 off 92 in Hamilton at World Cup 2015.

  • Lance Klusener boasts of a stunning average of 124 – the most by any South African batsman. He also tops the best-strike list with 121.17. De Villiers follows him at the second spot in both the lists – averaging 63.52 and a strike-rate of 117.29

  • Among the bowlers, Allan Donald has taken the maximum wickets with 38 scalps across 25 matches followed by Shaun Pollock (31) and Imran Tahir (29) at second and third spot respectively.

  • Seven South African bowlers have taken a five-wicket haul once each at the world cup including Andrew Hall, Klusener, Pollock, Charles Langeveldt, Andre Nell, Tahir and Dale Steyn. Hall boasts of the best bowling figures among the lot with 5/18 against England in Bridgetown (2007 World Cup)

  • Legspinner Tahir has the best average among the bowlers (minimum cut-off being 10 matches) with 14.44 across 13 matches. He also has the best strike-rate (minimum cut-off 100 overs) with 23.9 followed by Morne Morkel (25) and Klusener (27.5)

  • Morkel and Klusener jointly hold the record for the most wickets in a single edition with 17 apiece. Morkel though has a better average and strike-rate.

  • Mark Boucher has effected the maximum dismissals with 31 (all catches) in 25 matches across three world cups. David Richardson follows at second spot with 15 dismissals (14 catches and 1 stumping). With four dismissals, Boucher along with Morne van Wyk, also holds the record for the most dismissal by a South African ‘keeper in a single edition.

  • For a non-keeper, Graeme Smith has taken the maximum number of catches with 15 in 20 matches

  • Overall, in 55 World Cup matches, South Africa have registered victory in 35, lost 18 and two have ended in a tie.

  • Their biggest win (in terms of run-margin) came against West Indies in 2015 when they won by 257 runs – the second biggest in tournament’s history.
