CSK vs DC IPL 2019 Qualifier 2
Will CSK make their second straight final or will it be the Capitals to make their maiden IPL final?

CSK beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets to set up summit clash with Mumbai Indians. Easy in the end for Chennai Super Kings. MS Dhoni couldn’t quite finish the game but Ambati Rayudu struck the winning runs to take CSK into their eighth IPL final, across 10 seasons. Stunning stuff from the Men in Yellow. This means that CSK and MI will take on each other for the fourth time in a final. Both are three-time champions, and one will be crowned a four-time winner.

End of Over 18: Rayudu takes Paul for a couple of more boundaries. He has bled 49 runs from three overs. CSK 144 for 3, within striking distance.

End of Over 17: Huge roar across the stadium, which can only mean one thing. MS Dhoni is the new batsman in. Two balls into his innings and the noise grows louder as Dhoni is off the mark with a boundary. CSK 135 for 3, just another 13 more needed.

End of Over 16: OUT! Suresh Raina plays on. Wide and short from Axar and lose drive from Raina gets the ball to take the inner edge off his bad and thud onto the stumps. CSK 127 for 3, and although it looks like a a cakewalk for CSK, stranger things have happened. Can Delhi make something of this?

End of Over 15: Just another 29 needed off 30 at the asking rate of 5.8. Easy for CSK, who reach 119 for 2.

End of Over 14: Rayudu the new man in, takes his time as he and Raina milk singles. CSK 115 for 2.

End of Over 13: OUT! Watson can’t clear long off this time. His fine innings comes to an end. Amit Mishra is finally rewarded for some fine bowling. CSK 11 for 2, but surely in control.

End of Over 12: Absolute carnage from Shane Watson as he takes Keemo Paul for three sixes and a four. 25 runs from that over and that surely has to be the death knell for the Delhi Capitals. Watson brings up his half-century, off just 31 balls. CSK have backed their opener and he has delivered in this crunch game. CSK 108 for 1 and surely in course.

End of Over 11: Success at last for the Delhi Capitals. Faf du Plessis doesn’t get full grip of his pull shot and finds Keemo Paul, who takes a good catch at deep square leg. CSK lose their first wicket for 81. Can they make something of this now. Boult is excited.

End of Over 10: FIFTY for du Plessis. He gets there off 37 balls; it’s his 12th in the IPL. Watson then clubs a six into the stands off Axar. CSK 81 without loss.

End of Over 9: Delhi sloppy. A terrible piece of communication between Prithvi Shaw and Colin Munro gives Watson a life. The former Australia opener began the over with a nice paddle sweep for four and went aerial the next ball. Having miscued a sweep, he thought that was curtains for him, but Shaw and Munro had a brain-fade and gave him more time. Shaw had to move 15 steps back while Munro came running in with atleast 35 steps, got nowhere near it and it will go down as a drop catch.

End of Over 8: This is getting really easy now for CSK. Aiding them is some lacklustre bowling from the Capitals. Keemo Paul sends down an expensive first over. He drifts down FIVE WIDES followed by a couple of boundaries. 16 runs off that over for CSK, who reach 64 without loss.

End of Over 7: Faf du Plessis has looked so much in control, gets a sweep off Amit Mishra past the fielder running it from deep square leg. CSK motoring along just fine to reach 48 without loss.

End of Over 6: All the pressure mounted by the Delhi Capitals is off just like that. Expensive over from Ishant as du Plessis takes the India fast bowler for three consecutive boundaries in that over. The Powerplay ends and CSK are 42 without loss, a wicket and a run ahead of Delhi at the same point.

End of Over 5: CSK break the shackles with du Plessis taking Axar Patel on. A boundary and a SIX in that over gives CSK a much-needed move on. They move to 27 without loss.

End of Over 4: Delhi not giving away easy runs. CSK have scored just 16 off the first four overs with Ishant and Boult bowling some tidy line. Great economy and accuracy from the Capitals. They’re living up to their reputation of being the most potent bowling line-up.

End of Over 3: Bottom-hand pull from du Plessis and CSK have their first boundary of the innings. Nine off Boult’s second over. CSK 13 without loss.

End of Over 2: Another disciplined over from Ishant Sharma to give away just a couple of singles. CSK 4 without loss.

End of Over 1: Comedy of errors first up. A run out chance which is spilled by the Delhi Capitals. Bad communication between Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson and they both almost run each other out. Trent Boult bowls a fabulous first over to give away just a single. CSK 1 without loss.

Chennai Super Kings innings underway…

End of Over 20: Ishant Sharma finishes off in style. He smacks a FOUR and a SIX off Ravindra Jadeja to take Delhi Capitals to 147 for 9. Not to forget that Trent Boult belted a six off the second ball. Delhi finish strong with 54 coming off the last five overs.

End of Over 19: OUT! There will be no fireworks from Rishabh Pant tonight. His one-handed swing off Deepak Chahar goes straight to long-on. Amit Mishra keeping Delhi alive with some entertaining shots. Delhi 131 for 8.

End of Over 18: Full, Straight and TIMBERRR! Dwayne Bravo cleans up Keemo Paul. That one was fired in at 139 kmph. Usually, Bravo is known for his slower ones at the death. Well, this one was anything but that. Leg stump uprooted and DJ Bravo shakes a leg. Capitals 119 for 7, three overs remain.

End of Over 17: Tahir finishes his spell and ends up with 1 for 28. He could have added a second but Chahar’s fumble at long off prevented it. Pant miscued a shot and Chahar almost took the safely, only after taking it he went over the rope. He tried flicking the ball inside but couldn’t. DC 116 for 6 and Pant is the key here.

End of Over 16: SIX and OUT! First six off the match hit by Rutherford, and he absolutely smoked it, off the backfoot. Delhi fans rejoice but their joy is short-lived as Harbhajan gets his man the next ball. Rutherford went after it again but edged it to Watson at short third man. With that, Harbhajan picks up his 150th IPL wicket.

End of Over 15: Delhi get 8 off that over, could have gotten more had a couple of things gone their way. Rutherford gets a powerful strike down the ground which hits Rishabh Pant’s boots at the non-striker’s end. Then, he also missed out of a free hit after Bravo bowls a waist-high full toss. DC 93 for 5, yet to get to 100. Five overs remain.

End of Over 14: The wily old fox, Tahir, continues to bamboozle batsmen. He nearly gets Sherfaine Rutherford out LBW but the review shows the ball going over the top of middle. Next two balls, two googlies and Rutherford has no clue. DC 85 for 5, just six more overs remain.

End of Over 13: OUT! It’s DJ Bravo who lands yet another blow to the Capitals. He holes out to Imran Tahir at third man. Delhi in all sorts of trouble at 80 for 5.

End of Over 12: OUT! Imran Tahir gets his first wicket. Delhi lose their skipper Iyer for 13. Was it a google? You’re dead right. Iyer went for the heave but all he managed was a top edge that went high in the air. Suresh Raina keeps his eyes on the ball and takes it. DC in trouble now at 78 for 4.

End of Over 11: Shreyas Iyer gets himself a cracking boundary. Slower, full and outside off from Bravo and even though Iyer didn’t seem to get whole of it with his drive, it beat the fielder running it from deep point. That’s why Iyer is special and that’s why Delhi need him to stay out there. DC 74 for 3.

End of Over 10: If Delhi can bring out Pant, CSK hand the ball to Imran Tahir. What a wonderful battle it promises to be. Pant wins the first round by playing a scoop but who will win the battle? We’re falf way through the innings; DC 68 for 3,.

End of Over 9: OUT! Third blow for the Capitals and it’s the set Munro, who departs. Full from Jadeja and Munro takes brings out the pull shot. But unfortunately, he doesn’t get underneath the shot properly and holes out to Bravo at deep square leg. Capitals three down for 57. Out walks Rishabh Pant and gets off the mark first ball with a TWO.

End of Over 8: Delhi finally get a move on. Colin Munro smacks back-to-back boundaries, welcome boundaries might I add to being up the FIFTY for the Capitals. DC 54 for 2.

End of Over 7: More spin from CSK. Ravindra Jadeja races through his opening over, gives away just three runs. Delhi struggling to get going at 44 for 2.

End of Over 6: Gone! Edged and taken… Harbhajan drops it slightly shot but Dhawan’s cut shot gets a faint edge. Dhoni, behind the stumps, fumbled but takes it completely in the end. The pair of Harbhajan and Chahar doing the trick again for CSK. Powerplay gone and DC have scored a pretty average 41 for 2

End of Over 5: Tight over from Chahar, just four off the over, all singles. Each year, the IPL gives you one outstanding youngster. Chahar has been the find this season. Capitals 36 for 1.

End of Over 4: Munro in action straightaway with two contrasting boundaries. The first one was drilled down the ground but the next was a pretty questionable shot this early in the innings. Munro goes down to his knees and plays the reverse. Honestly, he’s lucky the ball landed safe. Ponting and Ganguly can’t believe it. Delhi 32 for 1 after 4.

End of Over 3: GONE! Delhi Capitals one down. MS Dhoni gets his review bang on. Shaw let down by his pull shot again. Short from Chahar and the batsman misses his gigantic swing. Despite the umpiring turning it down, Dhoni was sure it was hitting the stumps and he went upstairs. Guess what happens? Dhoni gets is right. No inner edge and the ball hits is crashing onto the middle stump. Are we even ready for a life after MS Dhoni? DC 25 for 1.

End of Over 2: WHOA! Terrific stuff from Shikhar Dhawan. He strikes Shardul Thakur for three boundaries in a row. Full and straight and Dhawan caresses the ball down the ground, TWICE. Thakur drops it short and he is quick to jump on to the backfoot and pulls it towards deep square leg. Not the best of starts for Shardul. 13 off it as Delhi Capitals race to 20 without loss.

End of Over 1: Shaw pulls the final ball of the first over for a boundary. A couple of crunching drives off the bat of Shaw earlier, but neither could find the gap. Finally he gets some bat to a short ball and pulls it away for the first boundary of the innings. Chahar doing what he does best, mixing the pace and keeping the batsmen guessing. Remember this is a brand new deck, and although it looks like a belter, it will pose some questions, especially in the first half hour in the game. Delhi Capitals 7 without loss.

Alright folks! As Triple H from D Generation-X would say… “Are you readyyy”? It’s game time. This match means a lot to Delhi Capitals. Remember, they have never been to an IPL final, whereas CSK… well, if they don’t make the final, it will just be the second time they miss out, of all the editions they’ve played in. The umpires are out, as are Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. As usual, Deepak Chahar will start. Get set, some pulsating action promises to come your way.

Captain’s Corner

Shreyas Iyer: Looks a far better one that the previous game. We felt that during practice too. We would have batted first actually, so not a bad toss to lose. We’re unchanged as we don’t want to put pressure on any new player.

MS Dhoni: We’ll bowl first. (If the toss is crucial) Depends on how the bowler’s start. Some of the tosses are crucial but it depends on how the opposition bats. I don’t mind that because all this increases the anticipation. Ultimately, you need to be aged to be experienced but again, there are pros and cons for everything. One change – Shardul in for Vijay

TOSS: Chennai Super Kings opt to bowl against Delhi Capitals after MS Dhoni wins the toss at Vizag. The Capitals remain unchanged, whereas CSK have made one change with Shardul Thakur coming in place of Murali Vijay.

PREVIEW

It’s youth and exuberance from Delhi Capitals versus the guile and experience of Chennai Super Kings. They made it to the IPL 2019 Playoffs for the first time in seven years and now Delhi are on the cusp of entering their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) final but must negate a well-oiled and experienced CSK brigade when both teams meet in Qualifier 2 at Vizag on Friday.

It was CSK, who denied DC a top-two spot in the league standing with a crushing 80-run win at the Chepauk. But this time DC might just have the edge knowing the conditions better after a cool Keemo Paul laid the finishing touches to Rishabh Pant blitz during a nerve-wracking two-wicket win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

What goes in Delhi’s favour is their fearless brand of cricket which they have displayed throughout this season and their fans would be hoping for another such performance against CSK. Click here to read more
