Daryl Mitchell, the first New Zealand player to lead the ODI batting rankings since Glenn Turner in 1979, has overtaken former India captain Rohit Sharma to become the new ICC No.1 ODI batter. Following his match-winning century against the West Indies in the series opener in Christchurch, Mitchell climbed to the top of the rankings.
The 34-year-old moved past Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and Rohit Sharma by only one rating point after his 119 off 118 balls, which earned him the Player of the Match award. Rohit’s return to the top lasted only 22 days. After making a successful comeback to cricket in Australia last month, Mitchell is now the oldest player to reach No.1 in the ODI rankings.
While players like Nathan Astle, Ross Taylor, and Kane Williamson have previously climbed as high as No.3 in the ODI batting rankings, Turner was the last New Zealand player to hold the top spot 46 years ago.
Pakistan star Babar Azam moved up one spot to sixth after scoring an unbeaten 102 in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi last week. Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, who struck two half-centuries each against Sri Lanka, moved up five spots to 22nd and 26th place respectively.
Pakistani leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed broke into the top 10 of the bowling rankings for the first time, rising 11 spots to a career-high ninth after taking three wickets in the second ODI against Sri Lanka. Fast bowler Haris Rauf climbed five spots to 23rd, West Indies pacer Jayden Seales moved up three spots to 20th, and Roston Chase rose 12 spots to 46th.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma achieved a career-best fifth position among Test batters after an unbeaten 55 in the second innings of the low-scoring Kolkata Test, which his team won by 30 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match ICC World Test Championship series.
India spinners Kuldeep Yadav (up two spots to a career-best 13th) and Ravindra Jadeja (up four spots to 15th) also made significant gains. South Africa off-spinner Simon Harmer’s figures of 4/30 and 4/21 at Eden Gardens lifted him 20 spots to a career-best 24th.
Bangladesh skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto (up four spots to 34th) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy (up 19 spots to 74th) rose in the Test batting rankings after scoring centuries in their innings victory over Ireland in Sylhet. Ireland’s Paul Stirling moved up from 96th to 80th.
