David Warner joins Ricky Ponting, Sunil Gavaskar in record

David Warner became the third batsman after Ricky Ponting and Sunil Gavaskar to score a century in both the innings of a Test for a third time. The Australian opener smashed 116 from 113 balls on Day 3 after scoring a 224-ball 163 on the opening day of the ongoing first Test between Australia and New Zealand at Gabba. After declaring at 556 in the first innings, the hosts bowled out the Black Caps for 317 with the duo of Mitchells—Starc and Johnson—sharing seven wickets between them. Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh claimed a wicket each, while Kane Williamson top-scored with 178-ball 140 for New Zealand. The other two occasions where Warner scored the twin tons were in 2014. The first match where the explosive batsman scored the two centuries was during Australia’s tour of South Africa with 135 in the first innings followed by 145 in the next one. Warner managed 145 and 102 against India during the last Border Gavaskar trophy Down Under. Australia won both the matches and he was declared the man of the match.

Meanwhile, his former teammate and Australian skipper Ponting achieved that milestone during the peak of his career. The first time when he scored the two centuries was in the Test against West Indies at Gabba in November 2005. The next one came when South Africa had toured Australia in 2006. Ponting scored 120 and 143 at Sydney Cricket Ground in January which was followed by 103 and 116 at Durban when the Proteas hosted the same opponents in March.

Two of Gavaskar’s twin centuries were against West Indies and the third one was versus Pakistan. He scored 124 and 220 at Queen’s Park Oval when India toured the Caribbean’s country in April 1971. Seven years later, he scored 111 and 137 against Pakistan in Karachi and that was succeeded by his 107 and 182 at Eden Gardens again against the Windies.
