Defiant Sehwag takes on the ICC!

Virender Sehwag

India opener Virender Sehwag stired up controversy for not sporting a number on his jersy during the World Cup opener against Bangladesh last Saturday.
While Sehwag didn’t have a number because of superstition, the International Cricket Council has taken the matter up with the Indian team management. The apex body feels that if such an exception is made for one player, there will be no end to such incidents.
Sehwag, in fact, has played all his matches since his return to the Indian team, without a jersey number. He is also known to carry a red handkerchief while batting.

When Virender Sehwag is a defiant mood, the world takes notice. The latest to take notice of his defiance was none other than the apex body – the International Cricket Council itself.

Sehwag is not interested in sporting a number on his official jersey in the ongoing World Cup and carried out his intentions by playing India’s opening game against Bangladesh the way he wanted.

The ICC is clearly not amused. They have spoken to the team management about the violation.

Sehwag is in no mood to relent. As he told Mid-Day, “I don’t want to use a number. My mother consulted some astrologers, who gave her some numbers which I could use. But I told her that I don’t have a number when I play Test cricket, so why should I have one when I play one-day cricket?”

Sehwag’s logic is backed by Indian team manager Ranjib Biswal. “If Sehwag could play the ICC World T20 without a jersey number, I don’t see why he cannot do that in another ICC tournament. And if the ICC wanted him to wear one during this tournament, they should have informed us earlier.”

It’s learnt that Sehwag had taken off the No 44 from his jersey at numerologist Sanjay Jumani’s suggestion. Apparently Jumani had advised Sehwag that 44 was unlucky for him as it added to the No 8 which is Saturn or Shani. “Sehwag used to average a mere 28 while wearing the No 44. Where there was no Jersey No 44 in Tests, he was averaging 55. We also warned him that he could lose his place in the side, which he eventually did. However, soon after discarding No 44, since a year and a half, he has averaged nearly 60,” Jumaani was quoted as saying.
