Call it a negligence or ignorance, ICC World Cup 2011’s player of the tournament, Yuvraj Singh, may have found himself in a bit of controversy, largely owing to the sports ministry. Yuvraj was diagnosed with cancer and treatment in United States of America. In 2012, the sports ministry of India handed over a financial assistance of Rs 5 Lakh to Yuvraj for his treatment under the “National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons.” However, there is a discrepancy now. The fund which was launched to financially help outstanding sportspersons, however, currently are living in down and out situation. Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports, wrote to Rajya Sabha regarding the matter.

Sonowal mentioned about the ministry providing ex-gratia financial assistance to sportspersons whose annual income is less than Rs 2 Lakh. They also released a list of beneficiaries since 2012. Yuvraj’s name is top of the list. It is to be noted that, Yuvraj garnered Rs 16 crore from IPL auctions. According to Forbes as of 2013, Yuvraj’s total earnings was 16.14 crore.

Yuvraj’s mother Shabnam was quoted as saying by Mumbai Mirror, “We didn’t ask anyone for any financial help and we definitely did not apply for it. Mr [Ajay] Maken himself contacted us and sent us a cheque of Rs 5 Lakh. We have always maintained that BCCI reimbursed all the expenses of Yuvraj’s treatment and some people helped us voluntarily.”

Earlier in May, Delhi Daredevils (DD) CEO Hemant Dua said that it was Indian Premier League (IPL) market that decided Yuvraj Singh’s price of Rs 16 crore. “I think we talk about Rs 14 crore-Rs 16 crore but that’s all a market place. As Yuvraj had rightly said (in Vizag) that he never asked for that price. It was a market place,” DD CEO Dua told PTI during an interaction.
