Rangana Herath is missing out due to a back injury IANS

Sri Lanka are already trailing the three-Test series against India 0-1. In what has been another tough outing against India so far, the visitors would aim to turn the tide as they seek to draw level in the series. The third and final Test goes underway at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Saturday. Dinesh Chandimal raised concerns over Angelo Mathews form and other issues. He also urged the youngsters to come up and perform, and not to rely on only Mathews to fire. He also stated the obvious that Rangana Herath‘s absence is a massive loss for the visitors. On Mathews under-performing

“Mathews is a senior batsman we have got in our batting line up but it’s not only him there are other senior batsmen also. And even for the youngsters, they all have to take the responsibility when they are out there in the middle. So it’s not only about Angelo but also about others, who have to stand up and perform in the middle,” said Chandimal during the pre-match press conference.

On Herath’s injury

“Rangana is a big loss unfortunately as he has got a back injury. We have got Lakshan Sandakan and Jeffrey Vandersay in our line-up. They have a good opportunity to play. We haven’t decided on anything yet but most probably we are going to do a few changes.” Vijay: Delhi Test should be a good preparation for South Africa

On the need to bat for long hours

“That’s a problem we have had over the last one and half years. The top-five batsmen have to play long innings. That’s where we have lost in the past one year. I am sure the guys will have different plans in the next game and they will do their best. We talk a lot about things at meetings but the problem is that we are not executing them in the middle. We have not applied ourselves according to situations.”

On the recent poor run

“In our life, we also have ups and downs. When you are losing, you learn so many things about how to come out of it. It’s a hard time for the team but I have a really good feeling we can change these things going forward.”

On his batting approach

“I don’t want to take too much pressure. When I am batting, I am only a batsman and not the captain. There will be no change in approach in my batting.”

On Delhi’s track

“If you look at the wicket [in New Delhi], I am not sure that they are preparing for South Africa. The Kolkata wicket looked like a South African wicket but not these two. They are thinking about the next series. We as a team are thinking about this series.”
