Washington Sundar became a household name in IPL 2017. However, that had more to do with his tidy off-spin. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder on Tuesday fell short of his maiden First-Class ton by 12 runs in the Duleep Trophy 2017 final played at Lucknow. Batting on 29 at tea, his team lost the well-set Vijay Gohil right after the break. He added 37 with Siddharth Kaul and 43 with Basil Thampi for the eighth and tenth wicket respectively. Of the 82 runs scored by Red in the second session, Sundar got 59. He was eventually dismissed by Akshay Wakhare for 88.

India Blue picked 4 wickets in the session, but they also leaked runs. Bhargav Bhatt finished with a 4-for while Wakhare bagged a 3-for. Ishant Sharma remained wicket-less. The Blue made a steady start and before dinner piled up 40 from 12 overs. Wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat was more watchful in his approach, while Abhimanya Easwaran was the aggressor, striking 3 boundaries in his 25.

The track has broken down considerably, and though it has remained good for batting, there has been turn and bounce. Red used the platform provided early, courtesy centuries from Prithvi Shaw and Dinesh Karthik.

Blue have plenty of experience in Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwary in the middle-order, and they will hope to cash in on the steady start and get a first-innings lead. However, for that they will have to bat out of their skins on a deteriorating surface.

Brief scores:

India Red 483 all-out (Prithvi Shaw 154, Dinesh Karthik 111, Washington Sundar 88; Akshay Wakhare 3 for 95, Bhargav Bhatt 4 for 154) lead India Blue 40 for 0 by 443 runs.
