Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar feels that Duncan Fletcher needs to assert his authority in the absence of the talismanic skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to help India overcome a poor run in the ongoing tri-series in West Indies.

India suffered two back-to-back defeats and face a do-or-die situation when they take on hosts West Indies on Friday.

“It is here that Duncan Fletcher must step up and show how good he is. Since Dhoni is out of the equation with injury, he cannot be the rallying point for the team; so it has to be the coach who has to do the pepping up. Virat Kohli is the captain but will need time to assert his authority,” Gavaskar said, in his column for Times of India.

Gavaskar also felt that stand-in skipper Kohli’s good form with the bat can motivate the side better.

“If he [Virat Kohli] can produce the big hundreds that he has recently done in crucial games, it will automatically create belief in his leadership for the rest of the team.”
