Nikhil Chaudhary’s past eight weeks have been amazing; he’s gone from smashing Haris Rauf for a six over backward point to conversing in Hindi with Brett Lee and performing a thigh-five celebration after collecting wickets. After Unmukt Chand, the 27-year-old became the second Indian cricket player to compete in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia. In his first season, he contributed significantly to the Hobart Hurricanes.
During his nine games with the Hurricanes, Chaudhary amassed 154 runs at 142.59 in six innings, including a fifty, and claimed five wickets with his leg-spin.
âItâs unreal to be honest. When I first got signed, I didnât know whether I will get a game or not. I was just happy to be here. I was lucky that I got a game and performed well. We were 47/5. I scored a 31-ball 40. The team management had shown the faith in me and I started playing and went from strength to strength,â he says.
âHe didnât give me a stare. He was more shocked after I played that shot. It was a good eight weeks. I didnât think about achieving this much, I only wanted to play a single game. All my hard work for the past three years has paid off,â Chaudhary says.
However, he did not achieve success in Australia right once, and his rise to prominence in the BBL is a fascinating one.
Chaudhary joined the Ranji Trophy team and established himself as a regular in Punjab’s white-ball teams throughout the 2019â20 season. He took a vacation to Brisbane in the first week of March after the season, little realizing that it would eventually become his home.
