England are 83 for 2 in 31 overs before lunch. They were lucky to survive the first session with just two wickets down. Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat first.Cook came on to the crease needing just 20 runs to get to complete his 10,000 test runs. He looked positive but was sent back to the pavilion by a beauty from Suranga Lakmal. He walked off the field needing five runs more to become the youngest to reach 10,000 runs.  He managed to make only 15 runs. Shaminda Eranga also bowled at good areas to keep the pressure on the batsman despite not getting a wicket. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: England vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test at Chester-le-street

Nuwan Pradeep started creating problems for bowlers straight away. He appealed for LBWs several times against Nick Compton and Alex Hales only to be denied by the umpire due to uneven bounce off the pitch. He bowled a bouncer to Nick Compton surprising him. He pulled the ball towards square leg region only to get out by a stunning catch from Lakmal, inches away from the boundary.

Rangana Herath also bowled well putting the batsmen on the back foot even on the first day pitch. He is just one wicket away from taking 300 wickets and become the second left-arm spinner to reach this mark after Daniel Vettori. He already surpassed Derek Underwood in the last match picking up 2 wickets. Alex Hales 45(96) and Joe Root 12(14) are currently looking comfortable on the crease trying to build a partnership.

Brief Scores: England 83/2 in 31 overs (Alex Hales 45, Joe Root 12; Suranga Lakmal 1 for 17) vs Sri Lanka
