England were bowled out for 171 by South Africa in their World Cup Group B match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. England innings disintegrated after a fighting 99-run fourth wicket partnership between Jonathan Trott and Ravi Bopara gave their innings some semblance of respectability after left-arm spinner Robin Peterson reduced them to 15 for 3 in five overs.
Â
England seemed to be on the recovery path through the solid stand between Trott and Bopara, but lose their way after the fall of Trott’s wicket. But it was not before Trott hit Dale Steyn down the ground for three runs to arrive at a well-deserved half-century.
Â
Morne Morkel got rid off Matt Prior for 10 before accounting for Bopara who fell soon after getting to his half-century for 60 before Dale Steyn trapped Tim Bresnanin front.
Â
Leg-spinner Imran Tahir bagged the wickets of Michael Yardy, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann to finish with figures of 4 for 38 from 8.4 overs as England folded up with more than four overs to spare.
Â
Earlier, Peterson was entrusted the responsibility of opening the attack alongside pacer Dale Steyn and the move nullified Andrew Straussâ decision to bat first as England lost three top-order batsmen and were reeling at 15 for 3 in the 5th over.Â
Â
The 31-year-old left-arm gave South Africa a dream start snapping up Strauss when the England captain tried to take on the bowler by stepping out to play a big shot over mid-wicket but only managed to find AB de Villiers at long-on â the fielder covering a lot of ground to pull off a low catch.
Â
Peterson capped off a superb first over when he dislodged Kevin Pietersen with one that found the edge of the batsmanâs forward prod offering Jacques Kallis a low catch at first slip.
Â
Ian Bell tried to give the England innings a move-on with a boundary off Steyn but it was not long before he became Petersonâs third scalp. He tried to use his feet to the bowler but did not get to the pitch of the ball and offered a return catch to the bowler who put up a fine effort, diving to his left.
Â
Brief Scores: England 171 all out in 45.4 overs (Ravi Bopara 60, Jonathan Trott 52; Imran Tahir 4 for 38, Robin Peterson 3 for 22, Morne Morkel 2 for 16) vs South Africa.
