Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and live cricket updates’ post of the first day’s play, between England and Sri Lanka of 2nd Test at Chester-le-Street. As witnessed in the 1st Test, England have already taken the first step winning by an innings and 82 runs against visitors. This could be the finale for them if they win this over. If Sri Lanka manages to take them over, then the series will get leveled up. England and Sri Lanka will be playing three Tests, and there are a few limited-overs matches scheduled as well. England will be eyeing nothing less than revenge against Sri Lanka, who had stunned them with a series defeat in their last encounter in 2014. Both the teams are coming into this game having lost key players. For England, Ben Stokes has been ruled out, and will play no further in the Test matches. Chris Woakes gets a call as his replacement. As for the visitors, Dushmantha Chameera injury has not only ruled him out of this tour, but also for upcoming series’ against Australia as well. He is likely to replaced by Suranga Lakmal. The first Test saw a brilliant all-round performance from the host team. Batting first, England managed to post 298 in bowling friendly conditions. The star of the show was Jonny Bairstow, who scored a magnificent 140 to rescue his side from a precarious situation.

He was duly supported by Alex Hales, who scored 86. In their reply, the young Lankan batting unit were bowled out for a mere 91, thanks to a fifer from James Anderson. The 2nd Test will be determined by the batting display of Sri Lanka. If their batters succeed and get runs on the board, England can be put under pressure. If the batting fails, look out for another game to end before Day 5.

Pradeep stole the show with his impressive swing bowling taking three wickets. He was backed up by youngster Siriwardana taking two wickets and Lakmal taking one. Ali looks promising timing the ball well. Woakes has just joined him and is looking for another partnership to throw Sri Lanka off their game and try to pull off something similar to the previous game.

Bairstow departed for 48 off 57 deliveries. The hosts need a few partnerships from their lower order batsman to dominate Sri Lanka in 2nd Test match. Sri Lankan bowlers seem to be enjoying bowling on this track with the new ball, especially Pradeep having taken three wickets today.

Bairstow and Ali are playing cautiously, trying not to throw their wicket away. Sri Lanka take the new ball after 80 overs and fast bowlers come back into the action. Ali edged one into the slips there was no fielder to take the catch. Sri Lanka are losing their hold over the match as they are letting England batsmen concede runs.

Bairstow is looking good playing his natural game trying to hit the ball towards the boundary along with caution. Ali too is middling the ball and playing cover drives. These players will look to take England to a big score. They will be tested against new ball which will be due after 3 overs.

Herath is still not able to pick up one wicket.

He attempted the pull short only to find Lakmal in the square leg region. He took a stunning catch to send the batsman packing, inches away from the boundary. Joe Root came to the crease and was beaten straight away. Hales is holding onto one end and scoring an odd boundary. Root looks a bit settled now, hitting a couple of boundaries to boost his confidence. He is scoring just less than run a ball.

Herath is also giving the batsmen hard time getting an odd off side edge of the bat. The bowlers are trying too hard to get rid of the batsman but proving a bit unlucky.

Pradeep took him by surprise a few times, appealing for LBW. Alex Hales is barely getting any strike and is beaten by the bowler a couple of times too. Rangana Herath comes into bowl in 20 overs and finds a nick on the first ball. He is creating problems for England batsmen as he looks for his 300th wicket in Test Cricket.

Lakmal strikes and sends a desperate Alastair Cook back to pavilion for 15. he falls short of 5 runs to reach 10,000 runs in Tests. Nick Compton arrives at the crease and trying to settle in at first and recover from the first wicket. Hales has taken a backseat too as bowlers look to attack the English batsmen with new ball.

Hales hits first boundary off the match on the last delivery of 5th over.
