Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and live cricket updates’ post of the Day 2 play, between England and Sri Lanka of 2nd Test at Chester-le-Street. On Day 1, England were  310 for 6 in 90 overs before Day 1 stumps.  Sri Lanka had a good start today taking Alastair Cook’s wicket early on in the innings and then sending Nick Compton back to the pavilion through a brilliant catch by Suranga Lakmal in the deep square leg region. They got the hosts on the back foot going into lunch with 83/2 in 31 overs. Alex Hales and Joe Root indulged in a 96 run stand to put England back on track. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: England vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test at Chester-le-street

Alex Hales scored 83 and Joe Root scored 80 to do some damage control. Hales again failed to convert a good start into big innings. Sri Lankan fielders were spectacular in the field with a catch in the slips to dismiss the skipper Alastair Cook and then a spectacular take by Lakmal at the boundary to get rid of Nick Compton. Sri Lankan bowlers did well to utilize new ball and using an odd bouncer to surprise the batsmen. It was followed by a stunner of a catch from Thirimanne to dismiss Vince who was looked promising at the score of 35. The Durham pitch lacked pace with ball keeping low.

Alastair Cook yet again failed to reach the 10,000 run mark in Tests. He scored 15 runs to continue his bad run in the Tests. Rangana Herath needed just one wicket to become the second left-arm spinner in the world to take 300 wickets in Tests after Daniel Vettori. He remained wicket-less at the end of the innings. As witnessed in the 1st Test, England have already taken the first step winning by an innings and 82 runs against visitors. This could be the finale for them if they win this over. If Sri Lanka manages to take them over, then the series will get leveled up.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 91/8 | 40 overs| Lahiru Thirimanne 12(66) Suranga Lakmal 0(3): Sri Lanka barely made it to the pavilion without getting all out under 100 runs. Broad came back into the attack and took two wickets in one over to take one step towards enforcing follow on. He removed Herath after getting hit for the boundary in previous over. Soon after that he removed Eranga for a duck to increase the pressure on Sri Lanka. Thirimanne makes it into the pavilion without getting bowled. England showing the visitors how to bowl on this track. Another follow on is in waiting for Sri Lanka. Only 79 overs being bowled today.

OUT!!! Shaminda Eranga c Root b Broad 2

OUT!!! Rangana Herath c Anderson b Broad 12

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 88/6 | 37 overs| Lahiru Thirimanne 11(55), Rangana Herath 12(44): Moeen Ali is bowling a very tight line around middle and off stump giving the two left hand batsmen no room to hit the ball into gaps. A run is scored occasionally. Herath, the senior-most player in the team is barely handling England’s lethal bowling attack. But he is batting well just to stop the fall of wickets from one end. Thirimanne has taken up the job to get settled instead of playing any rash shot and throw his wicket away like his teammates. A couple of twos in Broad’s over followed by another maiden from Ali. Finally a boundary from Herath who pulls the short ball for a four towards square leg region. A boundary after ages!! 10 runs off the last 5 overs.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 78/6 | 32 overs| Lahiru Thirimanne 6(46), Rangana Herath 7(24): Spin has been introduced now in the form Moeen Ali. Pressure can easily be seen mounting over the batsmen as they are barely helping the scorers change the scoreboard. Woakes has been bowling maidens and giving less rooms to work the ball into the gaps. Only three runs in the last five overs. Herath is playing cautiously, trying not to lose his wicket. He is trying to support Thirimanne on the other end.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 75/6 | 27 overs| Lahiru Thirimanne 5(29), Rangana Herath 5(11): Sri Lankan batsman trying to do damage control after yet another batting collapse.  These five overs included three maidens. They are celarly heading towards a follow on like the one they faced in 1st Test. Woakes is bowling brilliantly giving the batsmen a hard time and no room to score runs and pick easy singles. Sri Lanka have a tough road ahead of them. Herath needs to score a half century like he did against Leicestershire after a similar batting collapse.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 67/6 | 22 overs| Lahiru Thirimanne 2(10), Rangana Herath 0(0): Sri Lankan batsmen are in a hurry to end this Test match like the last one. Woakes picks up three wickets as Sri Lanka had another batting collapse in the series. Woakes first removed skipper Mathews, getting an offside edge to Bairstow. After that followed a double blow in a single over. First he removed set batsman Kusal  Mendis for 35 and then Siriwardana for a duck.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 56/3 | 17 overs| Kusal Mendis 28(53), Angelo Mathews 1(2): Sri Lanka have their back against the wall once again losing 3 wickets early on in the innings. Chandimal gets out trying to hit the ball firmly. He falls prey to Anderson as he picks his second. He is bowling brilliantly today shaping the ball away from the batsman and inviting him to drive.  It depends on skipper now, how he plays against England’s lethal bowling attack.

OUT!!! Dinesh Chandimal c Cook b Anderson 4

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 44/2 | 12 overs| Kusal Mendis 22(36), Dinesh Chandimal 0(0): Sri Lanka are trying to survive the new ball at Durham. They lost another wicket in the form of opener Silva for 13. England are currently dominating the visitors. The wing off the pitch is helping the bowlers to get the outside edge off the bat. Anderson and Broad are asking some serious question from the batsmen outside the off stump. Dinesh Chandimal comes out to bat.

OUT!!! Kaushal Silva c †Bairstow b Broad 13

TEA BREAK!!!

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 32/1 | 7 overs|  Kaushal Silva 9(8) Kusal Mendis 14(20): Sri Lanka have a long way to go today as they trail by 466 runs. It will be a tough task for them to get anywhere near that total having lost one wicket early on in the innings. They need a big partnership to bring them back into the game.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES Sri Lanka 20/1 | 5 overs|  Kaushal Silva 2(3) Kusal Mendis 9(13): Late swing from Anderson creating problems for Sri Lankan batsmen straight away. He picked up the wicket of Karunaratne in his second over. He had no clue from where the ball swung and hit the leg stumps. England got the breakthrough they needed to create the pressure on the visitors right from the start. Broad is also bowling in good areas through round the wicket angle. He is giving no room to the batsmen to free their arms. England have opted for and attacking field with four slips. Mendis comes out to bat, the visitors will be banking on him to create a partnership with Silva.

OUT!!! Dimuth Karunaratne b Anderson 9

INNINGS BREAK!!!

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 498/9 | 130 overs| Moeen Ali 155(207), James Anderson 8(7): Sri Lankan still unable to get Moeen Ali out as Alastair Cook declares the innings and calls the batsmen back to the pavilion. Ali played a splendid innings to rescue England, taking the team to a dominating position.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 494/9 | 130 overs| Moeen Ali 152(197), James Anderson 7(5): Rangana Herath finally takes his 300 wicket in Tests removing tailender Steven Finn for 10. He tried to slog the ball against the spin and it hangs up in the air. Herath calls for it and takes it comfortably. Ali is going berserk as he completes his 150. This is highest score in Tests. He is slogging the ball, playing pull shots, cut shots in an attempt to score runs quickly. He knows it’s just a matter of time before the last wicket falls. OUT!!! Steven Finn c & b Herath 10

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 471/8 | 125 overs| Moeen Ali 136(173), Steven Finn 10(36): Sri Lankan bowlers seem frustrated from the way Moeen Ali is decimating their bowling attack. Their fielders have put up a disappointed show unlike the First Day. Rangana Herath is getting hammered for runs round the park by Ali. He has scored 33 runs already from the past five overs and has no intention to lower the tempo of runs. Moeen Ali’s rescues England with a century

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 426/8 | 120 overs| Moeen Ali 103(156), Steven Finn 2(22): Moeen Ali is barely giving any strike to Steven Finn. He knows Sri Lanka are going to attack the tailender. He backed himself to hit boundaries and try to work the ball into open areas to take twos. He is taking a single off the fifth or last ball of the over to prevent Finn from lethal stuff. He completes his 2nd Test century off 152 balls. He has shifted gears after scoring his half century. He knows the importance of his wicket and trying to take the matter into his own hands and score as many runs as he can. LUNCH REPORT

LUNCH!!!

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 408/8 | 116 overs| Moeen Ali 85(135), Steven Finn 2(20): After Woakes’ wicket Sri Lanka are trying to mop up the tail quickly. Moeen Ali is looking determined to reach his second century in Tests. He is playing cautiously even after the wicket of Broad. The bowlers are targeting the newcomer Steven Finn with short deliveries from round the wicket angle. Pradeep came the round the wicket and took th wicket of Broad coming round the wicket and moving the ball away from him. He is looking for his 5th wicket banging the ball short to the tailender with an odd full length delivery. The first session of the Day 2 comes to an end.

OUT!!! Stuart Broad c Mendis b Pradeep 7

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 394/7 | 110 overs| Moeen Ali 77(123), Stuart Broad 4(5):  Sri Lanka are starting to attack here. Moeen Ali completes his sixth half century and with that his 1,000 Test runs. He took 39 inning to reach this feat. Impressive for a batsman playing at number eight. He took on Herath, bowling his first over of the day. He came dancing down the wicket and hit Herath for a boundary. Woakes departs and this time Mendis does not miss a regulation catch. Suranga Lakmal picks up his second wicket of the match. Stuart Broad comes out to bat and this is the last acknowledged batsman in England’s side. Herath is still searching for his 300th Test wicket. OUT!!! Chris Woakes c Mendis b Lakmal 39

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 359/6 | 105 overs| Moeen Ali 49(107), Chris Woakes 36(57):  Ali and Woakes have started to shift gears now. Sri Lanka’s efforts in the field are nowhere near to yesterday. The fielders have dropped both the batsmen now and given them second change. Angelo Mathews has again wasted his review. He used it for an LBW appeal which clearly showed a thick inside edge off the bat and onto the pads. Chandimal has left the field after injury. Kusal Mendis has taken his place as wicketkeeper. On a side note Jonny Bairstow is having an amazing time back in the pavilion. Woakes is looking comfortable now, hitting the ball into the gaps and timing the ball well. Ali is just one run away from his sixth half century in Tests

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 337/6 | 100 overs| Moeen Ali 43(101), Chris Woakes 20(43): Woakes is having a hard time on the crease having beaten by Sri Lankan fast bowlers at several occasions. On the contrary Ali is timing the ball to perfection despite a few hiccups initially. He is playing the ball to it’s merit and trying to work the ball into the gaps. He is cruising towards his 1,000 career runs in Tests. Lakmal has been introduced in the attack and is giving Ali no room to hit the ball into gaps. Just one run off the over.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES England 327/6 | 95 overs| Moeen Ali 41(83), Chris Woakes 12(31): First delivery of the over, EDGE!! and Dropped!! This was a regulation catch for the wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal and he drops it. The ball races towards the boundary for four. Sri Lankan fielders were agile yesterday taking stunning catches and now a dropped catch. This might prove dangerous. Chris Woakes plays the next deliveries with caution.  Pradeep continues with his third over. Ali takes a single off the first ball. Woakes is struggling against Sri Lankan pacers today having beaten a couple of times in the over. Just one of the 95th over.
