Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and live cricket updates’ post of the Day 4 play, between England and Sri Lanka of 2nd Test at Chester-le-Street. On Day 3, This Test match is heading towards only one side and that is England. Sri Lanka are currently on 309 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Dinesh Chandimal (54) and Milinda Siriwardana (35) are on the pitch trying to save their team from misery. Chandimal completed his fifty despite injury to inspire everyone. Siriwardana too is contributing well after playing himself in. Sri Lankan batsmen failed to spend time on the pitch in order to get themselves into a better position in the second Test. Mathews came back into form and scored 80 runs before edging the ball to wicket-keeper Bairstow on Anderson’s delivery. Silva was unlucky too as he departed for 60. He was dismissed by Steven Fiinn for a short delivery that bounced more than the usual. It took a leading edge of the bat and towards the wicket-keeper. It is just a matter of time before Sri Lanka loses this match and with it the series. England never lose their grip over the match. England enforced follow on as Sri Lanka were trailing 397 runs at the end of the first innings.

Lahiru Thirimanne failed to make an impact as he got knocked over by spinner Moeen Ali. He struck the Ali for two boundaries in previous over.  Dinesh Chandimal and Milinda Siriwardana are currently batting to save Sri Lanka from misery. There are only two scenario in this match but both go England’s way. First is Sri Lanka gets defeated by an innings and a few runs. The second one is Sri Lanka gives England a nominal score to chase and Alastair Cook manages to complete his 10,000 Test runs.

Compton is playing with patience trying to support his skipper in the middle. Despite the fourth day pitch, Herath and Siriwardana are not getting enough turn and bounce off the pitch to trouble English batsmen. Cook is shifting gears now and cruising towards the target and his half century to emerge victorious before Day 4 ends.

Cook is looking determined to take his team home. He is not playing any rash shot and running the ones and twos hard. Nick Compton has arrived the crease and will be looking to go back to pavilion after winning the match. Herath has not been impressive with the ball in this match with just one wicket and is unable to create any pressure on Cook. He was denied a wicket when Sri Lanka took a review which went down the drain.

Milinda Siriwardana has been introduced into the attack. He took 2 wickets in England’s first innings. He is expected to provide a breakthrough here which will be nothing short of a consolation prize as England are heading for a loss.

He is the youngest to do it ahead of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. It is a big relief for England skipper. He is looking comfortable today hitting boundaries. Hales is taking his time to get settled. Sri Lankan fast bowlers look harmless in these conditions. Rangana comes into bowl and delivers a maiden. England cruising towards victory.

The classical innings of Dinesh Chandimal ends with a slog as Broad knocks him over. It is all but over for Sri Lanka now. the tailenders are trying to score as many runs as they can to give themselves a fighting chance. A couple of chances here and there as the batsmen are edging the ball playing loose shots. It is just a matter of time before this innings wraps up. But this was a great batting effort from Sri Lanka after a humiliating first innings.
