Jonny Bairstow‘s unbeaten century helped England finish at 279 for 6 against Sri Lanka on Day 1. After Alastair Cook’s dismissal, Bairstow took the responsibility and kept his wicket intact. His partnership firstly with Moeen Ali and then with Chris Woakes were very important as England ended the day on a high note. For Sri Lanka, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Pradeep and Suranga Lakmal scalped two wickets each. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: England  vs  Sri Lanka , 3rd Test match at Lord’s

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 162/1, 49 overs |  Kaushal Silva 79, Kusal Mendis 25 | Woakes is back into the attack. He has bowled particularly well, and was unlucky not to scalp a wicket. Both these batsmen have done well to stay at the crease. Brilliant from Silva through covers, earns him his 10th boundary of his innings. Another four, this time from Mendis, who cuts the ball beautifully. Final over of the day to be bowled by Woakes. That’s the end of the day. Sri Lanka end at 162 for 1, trailing hosts by 254. See you tomorrow for the all important Day three.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 142/1, 41 overs |  Kaushal Silva 69, Kusal Mendis 15 | Silva plays a very loose shot. Luckily, the ball went for a boundary. Good shot from Mendis, not reaching the boundary but getting him three more runs. Just a few overs left in the day. Sri Lanka would be fairly pleased if they end the day without losing another wicket.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 123/1, 35 overs |  Kaushal Silva 59, Kusal Mendis 7 | Mendis is the new man to the crease. Runs are tough to come by since the dismissal. Both Mendis and Silva are hanging around, without getting runs at a pace like earlier. Finn has all of a sudden sprung into life, bowling really well. First boundary for Mendis, as he cuts the ball really well.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 108/1, 31 overs |  Kaushal Silva 50 | Finn to continue. Nothing has gone right for the English bowlers up until now. OUT! Karunaratne is caught by Bairstow.

Karunaratne c Bairstow b Finn 50

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 107/0, 30 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 50, Kaushal Silva 50 | A brilliant over for the visitors, as Karunaratne picked on the loose balls and scored 12 runs of Anderson. Both the batsmen are nearing their half-centuries. And it’s a century partnership between Karunaratne and Silva. Both the batsmen deserve utmost credit for their knocks up until now. Karunaratne reaches his half-century! Three deliveries later, Silva reaches his fifty!

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 84/0, 26 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 32, Kaushal Silva 45 | Moeen Ali has been brought into the attack. Just two runs coming in the last three overs. Moeen has bowled two overs giving the same number of runs. He is mixing up his deliveries cleverly, bowling flighted and quick balls. England are desperate to pick up their first wicket. Sri Lanka are looking to take the match away from them.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 82/0, 23 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 31, Kaushal Silva 44 | Chris Woakes and James Anderson are bowling currently. It has been a good start by Sri Lanka, just what the doctor ordered.  Chasing a hefty 416 required a good beginning. Silva, who has hit seven boundaries in his innings, needs six more runs to get to his fifty. Last four came off Woakes’ bowling. He bowls a full length ball to Silva, who played it pretty fine. Sri Lanka want this partnership to grow.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 75/0, 20 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 31, Kaushal Silva 38 | Woakes gets us back underway, and the first ball produces a boundary of Silva’s edge. Back to back boundaries, this time of the pads though. Anderson comes back into the attack for Finn. Broad pulls up! Hopefully not much serious. Good ball and appeal from Woakes, but umpire dismisses his call. England go for a review against Karunaratne. And just like yesterday’s call to Bairstow, the batsman survives as the decision is umpire’s call [50% of the ball isn’t hitting the stumps]. Cruel call! But that’s the rule. Another lbw shout and again given not out. No review used this time though. Broad has left the field! Another appeal from Woakes and again turned down. Third time in two overs.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 62/0, 15 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 30, Kaushal Silva 31 | Steven Finn comes as the first change for England as they look for the opening scalp. Optimistic appeal from Finn and England, with the ball clearly sliding down the leg side. Another bowling change as Woakes comes in for Broad. Dropped! Bairstow drops a sitter as Karunaratne gets a lifeline. Will England live to regret it? Fifty-run partnership between the two. Sri Lanka’s first 50-run partnership at the top in this series. Beautiful shot from Silva, who is growing in confidence. Another boundary, through third-man this time. Runs are coming easily here.  And it’s Tea.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 46/0, 10 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 27, Kaushal Silva 19 | Both Broad and Anderson have recovered after the ordinary first three overs. They are bowling good line and length now. Anderson bowls a ball on the pads, and Karunaratne accepts the invitation and glides the ball towards fine leg for a boundary. Another good shot from Silva of Broad for a boundary. Good ball from Broad, yorker length with loads of movement. The very next ball, Karunaratne guides the ball towards fine leg for another boundary. The Lankan batsmen are scoring at a good pace.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | Sri Lanka 23/0, 5 overs | Dimuth Karunaratne 11, Kaushal Silva 12 | We are back underway with Sri Lankan openers out to bat. And a positive start for Karunaratne, as he cuts Anderson’s first ball for a boundary. Another boundary, this time for Silva of Broad’s bowling. Second boundary of the innings for Karunaratne, who is showing confidence early on. Silva gets his second boundary as well, playing a beautiful drive of Anderson’s pitched up ball.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 416 all out | Jonny Bairstow 167 | One more wicket needed for Sri Lanka, but Anderson is no walkover. A short ball guided towards third man for a four. OUT! Anderson falls prey to a short ball. England are bowled out for 416. We will be back for Sri Lanka’s innings.

Anderson c Chandimal b Eranga 4

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 411/9, 128 overs | Jonny Bairstow 166 | Bairstow is still playing at 158 with England reach the 400 mark after a brilliant straight drive from Finn for a boundary. Luck favors the brave, and it surely is favoring Bairstow. A thick inside edge goes between wicketkeeper and slip for a boundary. England are 410 now. Finn is showing confidence of a top-order batsman. OUT! Finn is gone after attempting a big shot.

Finn c Lakmal b Herath 7

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 397/8, 124 overs | Jonny Bairstow 158, Steven Finn 1 | With 385 runs already on the board, expect Broad to take on the bowlers sooner than later. Broad is sizing up, expect few fireworks. England are closing in on 400, which probably will be the point of changing the gear. OUT! Broad is caught at gully of Lakmal’s bowling. Steven Finn is the next batsman to come in.

Broad c Mendis b Lakmal 14

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 384/7, 119 overs | Jonny Bairstow 156, Stuart Broad 5 | LUNCH | Mathews strays down leg, and Bairstow leg-glances him to reach his 150 and register his highest Test score! Herath sends down a maiden. Pradeep returns as Broad gets off mark. Pradeep comes round the wicket (why at his pace?). He unleashes a bouncer barrage, and Broad responds by cutting him for four.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 371/7, 114 overs | Jonny Bairstow 148, Stuart Broad 0 Herath comes back to round the wicket. He tosses the first ball up, and Bairstow creams it through cover for four. The moment Woakes gets on strike, Herath switches to the other side. Woakes’ perseverance ends as he steps out to one and hits it back to Herath.

OUT! Chris Woakes c & b Rangana Herath 66!

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 363/6, 111 overs | Jonny Bairstow 141, Chris Woakes 65 Herath takes his time to bowl, slowing up the proceedings a bit. That will halt England’s momentum. Herath is tossing them outside leg, with a leg-slip, a forward short-leg, and generally a packed leg-side field. Mathews has third-man in, Eranga bowls slightly short, and Bairstow simply rolls his list to guide the ball to the third-man fence, what a shot! That also brings up England’s 350! Angelo comes on himself to bowl his medium-paced cutters, while Chandimal walks up to the stumps.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 340/6, 106 overs | Jonny Bairstow 129, Chris Woakes 57 | Herath begins proceedings after drinks, but there is not turn. Woakes cuts Eranga behind point for four to bring up his maiden Test fifty. Eranga pitches short, and Woakes unleashes a cracking pull for four! Herath moves to over the wicket, but to no avail.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 323/6, 101 overs | Jonny Bairstow 124, Chris Woakes 46 | England continue to grind Sri Lanka. Pradeep pitches on leg-and-middle, and Woakes flicks it past mid-wicket for four. Pradeep bowls wide of off, and Bairstow places it behind point to the fence. Eranga replaces Lakmal, and Woakes immediately pounces on to one outside off, bludgeoning to the cover fence, that is Woakes’ highest Test score! Two balls later he flicks Eranga past mid-wicket to mid-wicket. That is drinks at Lord’s.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 302/6, 97 overs | Jonny Bairstow 116, Chris Woakes 33 | Pradeep replaces Herath from the other end. There seems to be no assistance for bowlers from the pitch. Second boundary of the day as ball goes towards the boundary of Woakes’ thigh pad. Both the batsmen are playing with world’s of confidence, and timing the ball beautifully. Bairstow hits the ball and gets three runs for it. Crowd cheer as England go past 300 runs.

Live Cricket Scores and Updates | England 289/6, 93 overs | Jonny Bairstow 112, Chris Woakes 28 | We are back underway at Lord’s for the first session of Day 2. England have their noses in front thanks to a wonderful century from Bairstow. Nuwan Pradeep to bowl the first over of the day. First runs of the day as Bairstow plays the ball towards leg side for a single. Herath to start from another end. First boundary of the day, as Woakes plays a good cut shot. Suranga Lakmal replaces Pradeep.

The hosts had a brilliant final two sessions, despite the dismissals of Cook and Ali. England were reeling at 84 for 4 after James Vince was dismissed. But since then, they managed to score 195 runs for the loss of two wickets. All the credit for that goes to Bairstow, who showed great maturity on his way to his second century of the series. Till the time Cook was there, England’s wicketkeeper played aggressively, scoring almost run a ball.

Earlier, the first session belonged to the visitors. England having won the toss got off to a good start, scoring 51 runs from first 14 overs. But since then, Sri Lanka took the charge by scalping three wickets in quick succession to leave the hosts stranded at 74 for 3 at lunch. Just after the break, they managed to remove Vince, but brilliance of Bairstow and Cook took the game away from them.

This Test is a dead rubber considering England had taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. They won the first Test by an innings and 88 runs, and followed it up with a nine wicket win in the second Test.
