England managed to gain a first-innings lead of 10 runs before their last wicket fell, as they were bowled out for 323 on Day Three of the third Test against South Africa at Johannesburg. Jonny Bairstow, who put up an impressive 45 off 84 deliveries to propel the visitors past South Africa’s first innings score of 313, was the last batsman to be dismissed when he was caught by Stiaan van Zyl at midwicket off a top-edge to give Kagiso Rabada his maiden five-wicket haul. The 20-year-old South African pacer finished as the pick among the bowlers with figures of 5 for 78, while Morne Morkel was the next best with three for 76 to his credit. England resumed from their overnight score of 238 for the loss of five wickets at the start of the third day, with centurion Joe Root departing barely minutes after the start of play. The No. 4 batsman, who had brought up his ninth Test ton in the final session of the second day, got an inside edge off a Rabada delivery at the end of the 55th over. Moeen Ali put hit a couple of boundaries during his 28-ball 19, adding 37 for the seventh wicket before getting dismissed in a manner similar to that of Root, this time off the bowling of Morkel. Bairstow however, kept scoring steady runs for England during this time even though he was fast losing out on support on the other end, with Rabada and Morkel cleaning out the English tail. His presence ensured England moved past the 300-run mark, and eventually got England the lead with a boundary towards long-leg off Rabada’s bowling in the 75th over!

Brief scores:

South Africa 313 (Dean Elgar 46, Hashim Amla 40, AB de Villiers 36; Ben Stokes 3 for 53, Steven Finn 2 for 50, Ben Stokes 2 for 53) trail England 323 (Alastair Cook 18, Nick Compton 26, Joe Root 110, Ben Stokes 58, Jonny Bairstow 45; Kagiso Rabada 5 for 78, Morne Morkel 3 for 76) by 10 runs.
