Earlier, England captain Alastair Cook had luck on his side as he won the all-important toss in the third Test of the five-match series against India at Mohali. He had no hesitation in opting to bat first on a track which is likely to be a difficult one for the side batting fourth. Cook also announced the changes England have made for the Test, with two being forced changes. Ace pacer Stuart Broad got himself injured in the last Test and has been replaced by Chris Woakes. Young spinner Zafar Ansari, who was ineffective in the previous outing, was also ruled out with back pain.

India made a couple of forced changes. Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was ruled out of the third Test with an injury and was replaced by Parthiv Patel, who was returning to Test cricket after 8 years. Parthiv is set to open with Murali Vijay as KL Rahul got himself injured once again on the eve of the third Test, and has been replaced by Karun Nair.
