England lose Nick Compton after slow start against New Zealand at lunch on Day 1 at Lord’s

England have scored 56 for one at lunch on day one of their Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Nick Compton was dismissed by the left-arm spinner Bruce Martin. Compton was perturbed by the clutter of dot balls in his innings [four consecutive maidens were bowled during the innings]. He was not timing the ball particularly well. He missed out on a full toss off pacer Neil Wagner.  The opening partnership of Compton and captain Alastair Cook added 43 for the first wicket.

Compton played an uncharacteristic shot off Martin when he danced down the track to beat the in-field. The ball looped up to point where Tim Southee took a running catch to his right.

Martin would have had England No 3, Jonathan Trott at naught.  The one-down batsman came down the track and chipped the ball to Martin who failed to hold on to the return catch.

At lunch, Cook was batting on 30 while Trott was unbeaten on four.
