Sri Lanka managed to scalp the priceless wicket of Alastair Cook for 85 to finish strongly at Tea on Day 1 of second Test against England at Lord’s. Cook along with Jonny Bairstow formed a brilliant partnership which helped England come out of a tough position. The hosts came from lunch at 74 for 3, but were dealt with a blow soon, as James Vince was dismissed, leaving them struggling at 84 for 4. But since then, Bairstow’s aggressive intent and Cook’s calmness helped their side recover from the situation before the England skipper was dismissed just prior to Tea. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: England  vs  Sri Lanka , 3rd Test match at Lord’s

England started the second session at 74 for 3. Skipper Cook reached his half-century playing a lone hand. And his team’s situation got desperate few overs later as James Vince was bowled for 10, leaving England stranded at 84 for 4 and in dire need of a partnership. The next to come in was the in-form Jonny Bairstow, who scored an outstanding 140 in the first innings of the first Test. LIVE CRICKET BLOG: ENG vs SL 2016 Live Cricket Score, 3rd Test, Day 1

Bairstow survived a lucky break in the 36th over, when he was dropped of Pradeep’s bowling by Eranga. And he made them pay, scoring two boundaries in the next five deliveries. His confidence was at display, as he fearlessly played his knock, scoring at a very healthy strike rate. Cook and Bairstow stuck to the crease and reached 50-run partnership, which was very essential for their side.

Both the batsmen stood tall and took their side out of some trouble. And it seemed things were back to normal, but Cook was caught leg before wicket in the penultimate over before Tea, which shifted the momentum back to Sri Lankan team.

Before lunch, Sri Lanka managed to rock the hosts by scalping three wickets in quick succession. England were well on top over their opponents at drinks during the first session. But the visitors fought back, with Herath scalping Alex Hales which triggered the mini collapse.
