The test match is to be played at Leeds and will be a real test for Sri Lanka as they struggled against Essex and Leicestershire in three-day practice matches. This game will witness a few records as Alastair Cook needs 36 runs to complete 10,000 runs in Tests and Rangana Herath needs one wicket to surpass Derek Underwood’s tally of 297 wickets as a left-arm spinner. It is highly likely that Rangana Herath might take three wickets to become the first left-arm spinner to take 300 wickets  in Test cricket circuit.

Sri Lanka in a rebuilding face now trying to strike a balance in the team after retirement of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jaywardene followed by injury of Lasith Malinga. This tour will help them to get a first hand experience of overseas pitches instead of playing in sub-continent conditions. England are clearly favorites going into the series having a better team on paper along with home advantage. The inexperienced Sri Lankan side have nothing to lose and will look to adjust to these conditions.

Sri Lanka’s practice sessions were far from impressive, finding it hard to take wickets and losing wickets in quick succession to put them on the back foot straight away. The only positives from the practice matches were Dasun Shanaka’s hundred, Rangana Herath’s fifty and making life hard for the batsman on the pitch. Lahiru Thirimanne’s knock also showed positives as he has an crucial role to play on this tour.
