Kolkata: Darren Sammy (West Indies skipper) did not get any vehicle to get back to his hotel Taj Bengal after he had addressed press conference at Eden Gardens cricket stadium in Kolkata. This was after he had addressed the media persons yesterday before the final match against England of T20 World Cup 2016. After the conference, Sammy walked through the stairs four floors down to reach the main gateway of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) as he wanted picture of his with Frank Worrell whose photo frame was on the way. Worrell is considered one of the greats of West Indies cricket. After reaching the gate, Sammy found that no car was stationed there to drop him to his hotel. A report on mid-day states that the brand manager of Oppo Arvik Sarkar gave lift to the West Indies captain. Oppo is one of the International Cricket Council’s sponsors. Sarkar was requested by a journalist of the daily to give lift to which he was more than welcome. The West Indies captain finally reached his hotel in this way. Earlier in the conference, Sammy had said that his side’s stupendous World Twenty20 run was possible because of the players’ unity in the face of acute adversity. The West Indians almost did not make it to the World T20 owing to a bitter pay dispute with their Cricket Board. But once here, they showed sublime form to storm into Sunday’s final where they will take on England.
Sammy also posted a photo of him with Worrell through his Instagram account:
“People just paint us as money grabbing cricketers because of our success in Twenty20 cricket. But yes still they don’t respect us in that format. We get that sometimes from our own board,” Sammy said in the pre-match press conference. Blasting their critics, Sammy said the more they are castigated, the more they are united. He was reacting to a jibe by former English cricketer Mark Nicholas, who described the Windies players as “short of brains” in an article.
