Andrew Strauss, on Saturday, emphasised the need for his team to start strongly after a lay-off without competitive cricket ahead of series against Pakistan.

“We want to get that intensity right from the start,” the England captain was quoted saying in the Telegraph.

“This series against Pakistan isn t one we re going to struggle for motivation in as we know they are a very good side especially in these conditions.

“But it s important we take this opening game and the opposition seriously. We re not looking to ease into this fixture as it s vital we create some early momentum with a win.”

The 34-year-old said taking 20 wickets a game on generally unyielding surfaces for bowlers would be a challenge.

“We ve just got to play smart cricket out here,” said Strauss.

“When the ball begins to do something you need to strike. There are times to hold your position and times to go for it and we need to make sure we raise our intensity when that moment comes.”
