England cricket captain in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) Eoin Morgan, and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are reportedly being blackmailed to pay £35,000 before the first ball in the Friday’s match against Australia at Hobart. Morgan and ECB are being blackmailed over the cricketer’s relationship with an Australian woman.

A person has threatened to reveal embarrassing detail of Morgan’s relationship with this woman, whom he had met five years ago. The London Evening Standard reported that the ECB said it was contacted by a man asking for money.

The ECB is afraid that the blackmail bid may spoil its crucial ODI match against Australia at Hobart. England are currently involved in a triangular series with Australia and India being the other two sides.

The ECB has also reached out to the Scotland Yard to track down the person who is blackmailing them and their ODI captain. ECB managing director Paul Downton informed that the cricket board received two emails in last two days from a person in Australia asking for money.

He said, “There were references to a relationship that Eoin Morgan had five years ago with a single Australian lady. It was brief relationship five years ago and what appears to be a fairly deliberate attempt to exhort a sum of money from the ECB. The individual, who comes from Hobart, demanded that the money be paid before the first ball was played on Friday.”

The suspect is said to be the new boyfriend of the Australian woman, living in Hobart. He is understood to have discovered a phone with details of the England ODI captain’s relationship with the Australian woman.

Downton added, “We contacted the Metropolitan Police and a brief investigation tracked down this individual. He has now apologised saying it was not intended to go this far. My job is to ensure that the players have the optimum opportunity to prepare and play cricket for England both in the Tri-Series matches and the upcoming World Cup. We will not allow anyone to distract the players or the England captain.”

Downton added, “The ECB will not be pressing charges and the matter is now closed. The players will not be saying anything further at this moment. “

Morgan is currently in a relationship with Tara Ridgway, a law and public relations student at the Bond University in Australia.
