Escaping or attempting? Greg Matthews catches a bullet

England all-rounder Ian Botham was one of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball, and had the ability to single-handedly win games with the bat or ball.

In a World Series match in 1987, Botham was opening the batting for England and looked set for a big knock. He was on 45, when he charged Australian off-spinner Greg Matthews, and bulleted one straight back.

Showing superb reflex, Matthews somehow managed to get his hand in front of his face and caught the ball. It’s difficult to say whether he did that to attempt a seemingly impossible catch or he did it to save himself from being decapitated. The momentum of the ball sent Matthews down on the pitch reeling backward cartwheel style.

A surprised Matthews, then stood up with both his hands up, before his team-mates rushed towards him and congratulated with hugs.

Botham’s wicket proved to be the key as Australia bowled out England for 139 to win the match by 109 runs, with Matthews ending with 24 for two off his stipulated 10 overs.
