Touted as a front-runner to take India s head coach job, Lalchand Rajput has now been appointed as Assam Ranji head coach. Rajput will be replacing former India leg-spinner Sunil Joshi, who has now been roped in by Bangladesh as their spin consultant. Rajput last month quit his role as Afghanistan s head coach.

Rajput was coach of India during their successful run in 2007 and 2008, when the MS Dhoni-led side won the inaugural ICC WT20 title and the CB series in Australia. Speaking to Times of Indian, Rajput said, "I'm passionate about coaching, and it's a great opportunity to coach the Ranji team of a state association which I've known for years earlier--I've played three years as a professional for Assam and also coached the Ranji team later. I know the people around there.

Afghanistan Board decided not to renew Rajput s contract after the latter refused to travel to Kabul for a training camp.

Rajput was Assam's coach in 2000, having played for them as a player as well. Assam sadly were relegated to plate division. This year they are likely to feature alongside teams like Delhi, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Railways and Uttar Pradesh.
