Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif welcomes resumption of Indo-Pak cricket

Add Cricket Country as a Preferred Source

Pakistan‘s opposition PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday welcomed the resumption of cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, saying it would help normalise relations between the two neighbouring countries.

During a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal in the resort of Murree near Islamabad, the former premier described the upcoming cricket series between the two countries as a “positive and encouraging sign”.

India-Pakistan relations on the basis of parity are needed for durable peace in the region, Sharif was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the PML-N.

“Both countries can move forward for the development and prosperity of their respective peoples by ensuring good friendly and neighbourly relations,” he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket of India (BCCI) recently announced it had decided to resume cricketing ties by inviting the Pakistan cricket team for a short series in December 2012-January 2013.

Three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches have been planned.

Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, have welcomed the move.

During his meeting with the Indian envoy, Sharif extended his congratulations to veteran Indian politician Pranab Mukherjee on his election as the President.

Sabharwal lauded Sharif’s commitment to peace in the region, saying friendly relations between India and Pakistan will help improve the living standards of the people. (PTI)
