Former West Indies all-rounder Bernard Julien dies at the age of 75

Former West Indies all-rounder Bernard Julien has passed away at the age of 75 in Valsayn, Northern Trinidad. Julien played a key role in the 1975 Men’s Cricket World Cup, the first-ever edition, which West Indies won. During the tournament, he took 4 wickets for 20 runs against Sri Lanka in the group stage and 4 wickets for 27 runs in the semi-final against New Zealand.

However, Bernald Julien also scored a quick 26 runs off 37 balls and contributed his best with the bat in the 1975 World Cup final. The innings helped West Indies team to beat Australia and lift the trophy. Whenever he played on the field it always showcased his persona as a fearless all-rounder, known for his left-arm seam bowling, aggressive batting, and lively fielding.

Clive Lloyd remembered Julien’s heroics and legacy while speaking to the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian, as he said, “He always gave you over 100 per cent. He never shirked his duties, and I could always rely on him with bat and ball. He gave his all every time. What a fine cricketer. We all had total respect for him. He enjoyed himself and was loved by everyone around. I remember we won the Test match at Lord’s and stood there and signed autographs for a long time. He was good for us and was held in high regard everywhere we went.”

Kishore Shallow, the president of Cricket West Indies, also expressed grief over the passing of Bernard Julien. “As we honour Bernard Julien, we also recognise the importance of reflection and inclusion. The time has come to view that chapter of our history not through exclusion but through understanding,” he said n a Cricket West Indies statement.
