Former Zimbabwe umpire Ian Robinson, who officiated in 28 Test matches and 90 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), passed away at the age of 69 in Harare last night. Robinson first officiated in an international match in Zimbabwe’s inaugural Test match against India back in 1992. At the sad demise of cricket’s iconic umpire, International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed deepest condolences to the Robinson family. Adrian Griffith, ICC’s Senior Manager Umpires and Referee, in a statement said, “Ian’s passing is very sad news. He was not only a fine Umpire but also a well-regarded administrator of the game. He spent three decades serving the sport as an Umpire at domestic and International level, and he was a key member in the ICC’s efforts to train and develop world class umpires in the Africa region.”

Robinson was also ICC Regional Umpire’s Performance Manager and has been an integral part of the ICC committee. Griffith further added, “Ian’s dedication and commitment to the growth of match officiating was special, and we thank him for his contribution to the game.” Also read: Virat Kohli named captain in ICC men’s team for T20 World Cup 2016

The highlight of Robinson’s career includes officiating in three World Cups: 1992, 1996 and 1999. Arguable, this was cricketing world’s most remarkable era and officiating during this phase is a magnificent feat to achieve. Robinson called it a day from international umpiring in 2008 to invest more time as his post as the ICC’s Regional Umpires’s Performance Manager for Africa.

Rest in peace, Ian Robinson!
