Former champions and hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir and batsman Manish Pandey scored twin crucial half-centuries, as KKR finished on a challenging total of 183 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs, against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), in Match 48 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016, at the historic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Monday.Earlier, RCB skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first, as he made a change in the form of Iqbal Abdulla coming in for Varun Aaron, while KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir too made a change in the form of Ankit Rajpoot, coming in for Umesh Yadav. KKR were off to a shaky start as opener Robin Uthappa was dismissed for a mere couple in the third over, with just 14 runs on the board, as Iqball Abdulla made him caught and bowled. Nevertheless, RCB’s opening success was short-lived as it was the pair of Gambhir and Pandey, who contributed a crucial 76-run stand for the second wicket, as they eventually took KKR to a strong position. Meanwhile, Gambhir brought up his half-century in 32 deliveries, including seven boundaries, along with a strike rate of 150. However, he fell after scoring the next run, in the form of an unfortunate run out, following a mix-up along with Manish in the 11th over, at the score of 90. Following his dismissal, Manish too brought up his half-century in 34 deliveries, including five boundaries and a couple of sixes, along with a strike rate of 143, before falling off the next delivery to Sreenath Aravind, after being caught by AB de Villiers at long on for a forced error in the 14th over, as the score read 113.

Following Manish’s dismissal, there were a couple of cheap dismissals, as the partnerships were paltry. Yusuf Pathan, who has been in lethal form so far, was dismissed for cheap six, after being stumped by Yuzvendra Chahal at the score of 118, and soon to follow him was Suryakumar Yadav, who too was dismissed for mere five by Aravind, after being caught by Iqbal Abdulla at long off, as the score read 125.

Nevertheless, it was the pair of Andre Russell and Shakib Al Hasan, who batted out the remaining overs, as they contributed a crucial 58-runstand for the sixth wicket, while KKR posted a challenging total of 183 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs, allowing RCB to require 184 to chase it down in the same overs.

Brief scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders 183 for 5 in 20 overs (Gautam Gambhir 51, Manish Pandey 50; Sreenath Aravind 2 for 41) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore.
