Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was on Saturday announced as the captain of the Delhi squad for the upcoming 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. 26-year-old batsman Dhruv Shorey will act as his deputy in the squad consisting Rishabh Pant, Unmukt Chand and Navdeep Saini.

Ishant Sharma, who captained Delhi in the 2017-18 Vijay Hazare Trophy, has not been named in squad for the first three matches. Delhi open their campaign against Saurashtra at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Milind Kumar, who was Delhi’s highest run-getter in the previous season has been put on the standby list while Chand retains his place. Delhi had failed to qualify from their group last year finishing fourth in Group B with three wins and three losses under the captaincy of Pradeep Sangwan, who has failed to make the cut this time around.

Shorey will start his domestic campaign on the back of rich vein of form saw his rack up scores of 101, 97,45, 93, 40 and 18 in his last four competitive matches. The last three were First Class matches for India Blue in the Duleep Trophy helping his team to the title.

Saini, member of the Indian Test squad for the Afghanistan Test, will have pacer Kulwant Khejroliya for company with Manan Sharma and Pawan Negi completing the spin department. Experienced Varun Sood finds himself in the standby list along with Sarthak Ranjan, Bihar politician Pappu Yadav’s son, who had scores of 5, 3 and 2 in previous season’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Rajan had played just one match in the 50-over format lat year for Delhi, which remains his only List A appearance so far. Last year’s U-23 highest run-getter Hiten Dalal has been bumped up to the 15-member squad after being in the standby list.
