During the 2017-18 AshesSteven Smith provided a reason behind Glenn Maxwell’s exclusion from the 14-member ODI squad against England. Smith had said Maxwell needs to train more smartly. Australian selection panel member Trevor Hohns raised a finger at Maxwell’s poor run in limited-overs cricket in 2017. Maxwell has scored total of 272 runs from 13 ODIs at 27.20 that included 2 fifties.

However, Maxwell proved his stance through the Sheffield Shield matches. He notched up two double-centuries for Victoria, becoming the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Steve Waugh was surprised by Smith’s comments and believed it should have been conveyed personally. Maxwell was even supported by Ricky Ponting, who believes that the former can do justice in Lynn’s absence. However, Maxwell has taken Smith’s comments in good spirit. He will be sitting down with Smith and intends to clear the air with the captain.

In a chat with, Maxwell spoke about his meet with Smith and possibly of making return to the ODI set-up with Chris Lynn injured.

“I’ll address the comments with Steven personally”

“I’ll address (those comments) with Steven personally, I’ll have a chat with him. I know what it’s like to say things in the media. I’m sure there were only good intentions behind it. He’s only trying to get the best out of me as the Australian skipper. There’s not much you can say. I’ve got to listen to him and I’ll be doing my best to get on his right side and do everything I can to play for Australia.”

“I haven’t been thinking about returning to Australia ODI squad”

“I know it’s a replacement for Lynny, but I haven’t been thinking about it, that’s for sure. It hasn’t been my focus. My focus at the moment is trying to get the Melbourne Stars to their first win. I certainly have hunger to get back in there, but my main job right now is to score runs for the Melbourne Stars and I’m trying to do that at the moment. (Ponting is) an absolute legend, one of my childhood idols and someone I’ve always looked up to. So it’s great to hear him supporting me.”
