Glenn Maxwell‘s 90 powered Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to a massive 231 for four against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on May 7. It was a bludgeoning innings from the Australian as he struck six fours and eight sixes in his 38-ball innings. David Miller scored a brilliant 32-ball 47. The duo shared a 135-run partnership for the third wicket at a run-rate of 12.65. As all the other bowlers were being carted around, Mohit Sharma did well to pick up two wickets. George Bailey then hammered a 13-ball unbeaten 40 towards the end.

It is a top of the table clash as Chennai entered this Match 29 of IPL 7 topping the Points Standings. Punjab were in second position. Chennai captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl. Mandeep Singh and Murali Karthik came in for Cheteshwar Pujara and Lakshmipathy Balaji in the Punjab line-up. Chennai have gone in with an unchanged side. The total is the highest of this season’s IPL and the fifth highest overall.

Virender Sehwag and Mandeep Singh opened the batting for Punjab. Ben Hilfenhaus began proceedings for Chennai. The first delivery was outside off-stump and Sehwag driven through the covers for a four. The second delivery was on the pads and Sehwag flicked it towards deep mid-wicket for two runs. Ishwar Pandey shared the new ball with Hilfenhaus.

Sehwag flicked a straight delivery over mid-wicket for a four. Sehwag then hammered a length delivery over extra-cover for a four. He then repeated the shot two balls later and got the same result. Mohit Sharma was brought into the attack in the third over as he replaced Hilfenhaus. He only gave away one run in his first over.

Hilfenhaus was brought to bowl the fourth over and Sehwag whacked a length delivery over long-on for a six. While Sehwag was striking the boundaries, Mandeep was struggling to connect well enough. In an attempt to get some runs of his own, Mandeep upper-cut a short delivery from Mohit towards third-man. But Ishwar Pandey took the catch in the deep. Mandeep was out for three runs. The next ball was wide and Sehwag managed to get it through the gully region for a four.

But Sehwag’s stay was also brought to a close in the sixth over. He inside-edged a length delivery from Hilfenhaus onto his pads and the ball then struck the stumps. Miller was the next batsman in. He drove a full delivery from Dwayne Smith down the ground for a four. Pandey then bowled a short delivery and Miller pulled the ball behind square-leg for a four. That brought up Punjab’s 50 in the eighth over. Miller then drove on from Ravindra Jadeja through long-off. Smith mis-fielded and the ball went for a four.

Smith bowled the 10th over and Maxwell decided to let loose. He played a short-armed jab to a length delivery over the mid-wicket fielder for a four. Ravichandran Ashwin was brought into the attack only in the 11th over. Maxwell slog-swept a full delivery for a six behind square on the leg side. The next delivery was a low full-toss and Maxwell hit the ball high over deep backward square-leg for another six. Rattled by the back-to-back sixes, Ashwin then bowled two wides on the trot.

Jadeja bowled a flat delivery, but Miller came down the track and hammered the ball down the ground for a big six. That brought up the 50-run partnership between Maxwell and Miller. Maxwell then got an outside edge to a pull shot and got a four towards third-man. Ashwin’s first over yielded 17 runs. His second over was taken for 14 runs off the first three deliveries. Maxwell smashed one six and two fours. The fifth delivery was slog-swept for a six over deep mid-wicket. That brought him his half-century.

Maxwell then struck a length delivery off Pandey for a six over deep mid-wicket. Miller then swung his bat at a low full-toss and got an outside-edge. The ball raced away for a four through third-man. Maxwell then pulled the last ball of the 14th over for a four towards wide long-on. Miller then sliced a full delivery over short third-man for a four off Jadeja. Miller then played a lofted cover-drive for a six on the last ball of the 15th over. Maxwell then struck two sixes off Smith while playing reverse-hits over the third-man region.

Miller was then bowled by Smith for 47 off 32 deliveries. He struck five fours and two sixes. Maxwell then went down on one knee and slogged one from Mohit towards wide long-on. Jadeja was positioned at the deep and took the catch. Maxwell again departed in the 90s in this season’s IPL. Bailey and Mitchell Johnson then shared an unbeaten 49-run stand to guide Punjab to 231 for four in their 20 overs.

Brief scores:

Kings XI Punjab 231 for 4 in 20 overs (Virender Sehwag 30, Glenn Maxwell 90, David Miller 47, George Bailey 40*; Mohit Sharma 2 for 38) vs Chennai Super Kings.
