Hardik Pandya, India’s all-rounder, is presently rehabilitating from an ankle injury and is not available for national duty. Pandya received a severe injury during India’s ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh and has been out of the Indian squad since.

The stand-in India skipper made a rare public appearance after his injury on Monday, February 12. Pandya joined Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Gandhinagar Premier League’s launch. Shah took to Twitter to introduce the league, which aims to promote improved physical fitness. Pandya was spotted unveiling the award alongside Shah. The honorable secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jay Shah, was also present at the event.

The Union Home Minister posted about the occasion on Twitter, expressing confidence that the competition will develop sports culture in the area.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, ‘Parliamentarian Sports Competition’ is being organized across the country and under this, Gandhinagar Lok Sabha Premier League has started. I am confident that this cricket tournament, played between the 7 constituencies of Gandhinagar Lok Sabha, will prove useful in promoting sports culture and a healthy lifestyle in the area,” Amit Shah wrote on Twitter.

In the absence of Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav headed the Indian T20I team against Australia and South Africa. The batter’s captaincy, as well as his on-field performance, drew attention. After Suryakumar injured his ankle in the T20I series against South Africa, Rohit Sharma took leadership of the Afghanistan series. Rohit returned to captaincy after more than a year away from the format and quickly scored a century. Pandya did not play in the three-match series against Afghanistan and is anticipated to return in the Indian Premier League 2024 season, when he will head the Mumbai Indians.
