Herath joins Underwood (most 10WMs for left-arm bowlers)

Sri Lanka recorded historic win against Australia by winning the last Test by 163 runs. Rangana Herath took 13 wickets in the match of which 7 came in the second innings winding up Australia. This is also 6th time that Herath has got 10 wicket hauls in Tests wherein each one has come against different teams, including Australia equalling Derek Underwood’s record. Before this series, Sri Lanka had beaten Australia just once in one single Test in 33 years of cricket between the nations. Set 324 to win, Australia reached 77 without loss but the dismissal of opener Shaun Marsh at the stroke of lunch triggered batting collapse and the visitors were bowled out for a second-innings total of 160 in the middle session. Moreover Herath has now topped the list of claiming most wickets in as Test by a Left-arm bowler. The list is followed by Wasim Akram with 25 wickets, Daniel Vettori with 20 wickets, Derek Underwood with 17 wickets and Bishan Bedi with 14 wickets in top 5.. This series has been a complete disappointment for Australia wherein they came as no. 1 Test team and have now eventually slumped to 3rd behind India and Pakistan. This is Australia’s 3rd consecutive Test series defeat in Asia where have been whitewashed which include 4-0 by India 2012-13, 2-0 by Pakistan in 2014-15 and 3-0 by Sri Lanka 2016. Interestingly, this was the 4th consecutive time in Tests against Australia that Herath took 4 or more wickets in his team’s first innings of the match.
