High Court dismisses petition challenging land allotment to Sehwag

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a petition filed to challenge Haryana government’s decision to allot land to star Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag to open a cricket academy in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Mr. Rakesh Chahar and a few others had sought a direction to quash the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the state government in 2008 to transfer the land in favour of Sehwag.
According to the Times of India, the petitioner contended that Sehwag had set up an international school on the land allotted for cricket academy, and the school is charging hefty fees.
Sehwag’s Krishna Drishti Educational Society was allotted over 23 acres in Jhajjar’s Shilani Kesho village in October 2008 on a 33-year lease by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government for a sports complex at a price of Rs 3 lakh per acre to promote cricket in their region.
Justice SK Mittal, after dismissing the appeal, said there was no merit in the contentions raised by the petitioners and denied to interfere in the matter.
