Man of the Match: Kusal Perera

I believe India were 15 runs short. Rishabh Pant did not get going. Run-a-ball wasn’t good enough. 190 would have been more competitive.

IND v SL Updates: Unadkat starts with a dot. Shanaka gets it on slot and smashes it through extra cover for a boundary. A dot, a leg-bye and a wide. 18 off 14 balls. Thisara Perera clubs one straight for a six. Now again, it’s Sri Lanka’s game to lose. Well, they were always a big hit away. Unadkat attempts another yorker and Thisara clubs the low full toss straight for a boundary. 16 off the over.

  • 10:15 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: 35 off 4 overs. Shankar to bowl. This might be the game changer. The debutant will be under immense pressure. Thisara Perera goes aerial and it falls between three fielders. Four off the first two balls. A high full toss and not given no! SL run two. SL getting runs but Shankar hasn’t leaked a boundary yet. Too many aerial shots but not wicket. 10 off it. Sri Lanka need 24 off 3 overs. It will be Unadkat in all probabilities.

  • 10:09 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Another brilliant over from Thakur. Only three comes from it. Who would have thought that after the pounding he received in the first over (27 runs), he would come back so well. The next two overs have cost seven.

  • 10:03 PM IST
IND v SL Updates: Chahal’s loop is too good for Tharanga. India are crawling back into the match. Tharanga misses the slog sweep and looses his off-stump. SL need 38 off last five overs. Thisara Perera is the danger man for India.

OUT! Upul Tharanga b Yuzvendra Chahal 17 (18)

  • 9:57 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Shardul Thakur’s second over goes for 5. Pant almost takes a stunner at midwicket. India need to grab those. Sri Lanka continue to be favourites for this contest.

  • 9:51 PM IST

Sundar’s flight deceives Kusal Perera. Dinesh Karthik completes the stumping. Huge wicket. He steps out, the ball passes the bat and DK completes a safe stumping. This has been a game-defining knock.

OUT! Kusal Perera st Dinesh Karthik b Washington Sundar 66 (37)

Sundar is back into the attack.

  • 9:17 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Unadkat falls victim to Gunathilaka. Smacked over midwicket for a six. It’s a 53-run partnership off 18 balls now. Bhuvi, Bumrah missed? Unadkat bowls a wide. Shardul Thakur’s 27-run over is the second most runs given by an Indian bowler in an over. Of course, Stuart Binny gave away 32 runs against West Indies.

Gunathilaka falls finally. He is deceived the slower one and chips a catch to Shikhar Dhawan at mid-off.

Sri Lanka 75 for 2 after Powerplay. This is there best score after Powerplay.

OUT! Danushka Gunathilaka c Rishabh Pant b Jaydev Unadkat 19 (12)
  • 9:11 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Four runs off the five balls from Sundar and Gunathilaka gets a six right. Sweeps it and India are 56 for 1 after four overs. India at this stage were 18 for 2. Unadkat replaces Thakur.

  • 9:06 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Shardul Thakur welcomed to the attack with a short-arm jab over midwicket for a boundary. Another Jayasuriya-esque boundary. Now uses the pace to guide it past gully for another boundary. Kusal Perera hits another one. He was waiting for a fuller ball and cracks it past cover for four. Three fours and now a six after the hat-trick of fours. What happened there! A high full toss and a boundary. That’s a no ball. Thakur is giving away the match here. Perera slams it straight past the bowler for a boundary. The last ball is a dot. 4 4 4 6 4 (nb) 4 0. 27 off the over.

  • 8:58 PM IST

IND v SL Updates: Washington Sundar to share the new ball. Off-spin here after weeks of wrist-spin dominating the headlines. Kusal Mendis tries to get out in every ball he faces and finally succeeds. He clears the mid-off for a boundary, then plays an uppish sweep for two. Eyeing the long-off boundary, he miscues and ball travels aerial before Dhawan completes a good catch at mid-off. What a waste of wicket, Kusal Mendis!

OUT! Kusal Mendis c Shikhar Dhawan b Washington Sundar 11 (6)

  • 8:53 PM IST

Ind vs SL updates: Kusal Mendis almost gives Rohit Sharma a catching practice at first slip. He gets a boundary. Six runs from Jaydev Unadkat’s first over.

  • 8:51 PM IST

    Well… SL chasing record.

  • 8:49 PM IST

Sri Lanka will need a similar power-packed effort

  • 8:38 PM IST

IND vs SL Live Updates: Pant has not really got going. He is tipped to be the future of Indian cricket, the successor of MS Dhoni. His previous knock in T20Is against West Indies was similar to this. India have lost out on runs. India get a welcome boundary in the final over off Karthik’s edge. Now Karthik nicely chips over square leg for a boundary. He used his wrists and the depth of the crease well. Perhaps, India missed out a trick by not promoting Karthik. Dhawan was a left-hander at the crease, sending another left-hander in Pant, in the 13th over wasn’t really a smart move.

However, Pant rockets one past extra cover to get a boundary. 14 runs already off 5 balls. Pant looks to clear the fine-leg and finds the fielder. SL need 175 to win.

OUT! Rishabh Pant c Nuwan Pradeep b Dushmant Chameera 23 (23)
  • 8:32 PM IST

    Dhawan’s last four T20I innings — 72, 24, 47 and 90

  • 8:28 PM IST

IND vs SL Updates: Shikhar Dhawan looks for his seventh six and this time finds Thisara Perera at long-off. This was a brilliant knock, Dhawan’s highest in T20Is. Another 10 runs would have seen him register his first T20I hundred.

OUT! Shikhar Dhawan c Thisara Perera b Danushka Gunathilaka 90 (49)
  • 8:23 PM IST

IND vs SL Updates: Chameera starts his third over and is greeted by another six. Chandimal drops Dhawan, whew! His fingers have been buttery tonight but that’s a costly drop. Yes, Dhawan smacks another six off the final ball. This time straight.

  • 8:17 PM IST

Another six for Dhawan. Sweeps it this time. Fourth one of his innings. A century is a possibility here.

  • 8:15 PM IST

  • 8:13 PM IST

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of the Nidahas Trophy 2018. This is Suvajit Mustafi and I will bring you the live updates of the first match between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo. Yes, it is India-Sri Lanka again but the teams wear a significant different look. The tri-nation tournament is being played to mark the 70th anniversary of Sri Lankan independence.

Both the sides will be without some of their key players. Sri Lanka will be missing the services of Angelo Mathews and Asela Gunaratne, and this is their best chance to beat the Indian side, who are stepping into the tournament without Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav.

Indian batting still looks strong with Shikhar Dhawan, Manish Pandey and Suresh Raina in form. Rohit Sharma did not get going in South Africa but was in rich form at home against Sri Lanka.

Either of Dinesh Karthik or Rishabh Pant will keep wickets for India. With Niroshan Dickwella dropped from the Sri Lankan side, skipper Dinesh Chandimal is expected to keep wickets for Sri Lanka.

Rain may play a spoilsport with slight chances of thunderstorm. We hope that is not the case.
